An accomplished shot Aidan, well done. I will have to pay this place a visit. You would have enjoyed the wildlife and nature photographer we had at BPIC a couple of weeks ago, you and he seem to be birds of a feather….. :D

    Very, very bad pun!

Visit the place on a Sunday afternoon. There’s a an RSPB volunteer there on most Sunday with some serious photo gear. Not the friendliest guy I ever met though. Personally, I’d rather be out in the open hide where there’s no double glazing to ruin shots.

    Thanks Carl,

The only problem I have with the “always open” hide there is that only the Redshanks and Godwits come over close enough to shoot. The Moorhens and the Teal tease you by staying just out of range. There’s tonnes (Gulls of all sorts, Shelduck, Shovelers, Lapwing, Herons, etc plus that’s where you see the brids of prey) over on the far bank … waaay out of reach of even an 800 mm. I decided to head over to the beach this morning with my portable dome hide: http://aidanfinn.blogspot.com/2007/03/best-laid-plans-of-mice-and-men.html

The light is a bit harsh, blown highlights on the breast and the back is in deep shadow, would wait for more suitable light myself, not sure about the WB either. Its all about the light really, otherwise a good shot. I’m waiting on a 1.4x converter to arrive from Hong Kong, anyday now! Taking all next week off to do some bird stuff from the hide in Galway and might try for a pine marten in the Burren.

Aye, you’re right on the light John. Light is a major problem with this hide. It’s in shade until the afternoon and then you get the sun in the birds face until sunset. The original had a totally blown out breast but manage to rescue a little detail by blending two exposures from the RAW file.

I hate using my 1.4 on my 100-400. I always end up losing detail. Still, I like having it. I’ve gotten one or two shots I wouldn’t have without it.

A Pine Marten. Cool. Can’t wait to see some results.
