Guide: How I process my Seascape photos
-
nfl-fanParticipant
OK.. stemming from this thread https://www.photographyireland.net/viewtopic.php?t=17895 as promised here is a guide that shows some basic, basic steps that I usually follow when processing my lanscape RAW images.
http://www.filefactory.com/file/ea3b38/n/Seascape_Processing_pdf
The guide is in PDF format which means you’ll need something like Adobe Acrobat or Foxit Reader to view same.
I like to keep things as simple as possible when post processing so you won’t find anything too fancy here.
Purpose here is to help so if you have any queries, concerns, issues rather than start a debate here just drop me a PM.
Cheers
Jossie13ParticipantThanks John……….just printed off, will have a good read this evening!!
Cheers Steve
nfl-fanParticipantCheers Ossie.
One thing I didn’t touch on in the guide was Shadows/Highlights and how I’d use them in conjuction with Smart Filters… reason being that Cathal’s shot didn’t really call any such adjustments.
It might be worth noting that the Fill Light slider in Adobe Camera RAW is very handy for opening up shadow areas.. but too much will cause haziness in the image. That’s where the ‘Blacks’ slider comes into play and you can re-adjust you blacks accordingly. The two sliders work well in tandem but go easy on them … they can get gnarly if you go too far.
A lot of this stuff can be found in Scott Kelby’s 7-Point System book.
My workflow was quite similar to his… but I’ve been able to improve and refine it even more since reading his book.

MarkKeymasternfl-fanParticipantCheers Mark..
I didn’t realize it was going to take me so long… at one stage I almost gave up… but now it’s done… sure if even one person get’s one tip from it then it’ll be worthwhile.
J
Alan RossiterParticipantIt’s certainly worthwhile for beginners and the experienced.
I saw you mentioning the filefactory before with stcstc’s action. Maybe a worthwhile thread to start would be tutorials like this without the comments, or a database to take from where this, and users actions can be accessed by members.
Some of us fo create actions to lessen the time spent in front of the screen…it might be useful to catalogue and share. Is this possible Mark with PI mkII?Alan
MarkKeymasterI can easily host the files here as a link for now. So John, if you want I can put this on the PI server and share out.
I will be working on trying to get a Tutorial section going, ie a dropdown from the top of the site
for Tutorials, not tutorial forums.
When thats up and running I’ll be able to add tutorials to it with full credit given to the member who has created the content.
So the member will get a short bio, link to their own site and if they don’t mind a headshot and the community/PI gets some very useful
tutorials. In the meanwhile, I’m fine with taking anything which people want to send me on, tutorials, actions etc… and hosting them
with the goal being to have them accessible in a structure manner going forward with full credit to the member who provided them.I’ll be putting out a fresh post on this sometime in the future anyhow…
thanks!
nfl-fanParticipantcathaldParticipantThats a great job John thanks so much i’m sure it took you quite a while to do
And i’m sure there will be more that me looking to buy you a pint
The only problem is i will be a bit nervous posting up my next shot
Again John thanksCathal
nfl-fanParticipantNext shot Cathal… just keep it simple… don’t over do it… the RAW you sent me yesterday only needed a slight nudge in the right direction. It wasn’t too bad directly off the camera.
PeteMcDMemberGood work John!
Well written, and clearly laid out. The article goes into enough detail to describe all the steps clearly but without getting bogged in unnecessary detail, which isn’t an easy balance to strike.
I notice you’ve called it ‘sample’ guide- if you’re doing a redraft, a couple of suggestions…
A few typos here and there, most noticeably ‘contract’ in step 8.
It might also be nice to compare before and after images together at the end.
Really great stuff
Pete
cathaldParticipantnfl-fanParticipantYou should be able to get through this with CS2 Cathal. There’s no major differences… I think… I hope.
Yep Pete.. noticed the spelling error on Contrast… I did to a spell check before hand but obviously Contract is valid too.
I was going to post and before and after comparison… in fact I had started this… but when the images and copied into the MS Word document they really loose quality and detail so it really wasn’t an accurate comparison.
DeeboParticipantGreat work John
Will spend tomorrow reviewing, Too much magners at the minute for it to make sense
