Halloween Festival with Fireworks

Wexfords Opera Festival was moved this year to the, ahem, summer as the Theatre Royal is undergoing a rebuild. So, not to disappoint the tradition of fireworks in October the local Chamber of Commerce arranged a Halloween Festival, which funnily coincided with Halloween.

Below are some shots I took of the fireworks. I was playing with settings to get images that I liked but going handheld doesn’t allow for a high percentage of keepers. All were taken on a Sony A700. COmpression has had a funny effect on a couple of them.

    60mm, 1/2 sec f5.6, ISO 200, Handheld

    70mm, 1/60 sec f2.8, ISO 200, Handheld

    30mm, 0.8sec f3.2, ISO 200, Handheld

    35mm, 1/25 sec f2.8, ISO 1600, Handheld

    Thanks guys.

I think the camera allowed for hand holding to be honest. If you look at the Exif data I was using borderline handholding shutter speeds but the Sony A700 has an inbuilt IS system that allows, according to Sony, up to 4 stops extra. Realistically that’s around 3 stops max but it’s enough.

I tried fireworks before, handheld also, and mine were a complete disaster.
The new Olympus E3 is supposed to have a similar IS system but I doubt if
it’s close to three stops, let alone four. These look pretty good to me, especially
the first two. Well controlled Alan.
