Hands

ciaranParticipant
Some people say that if you want to judge a persons age, take a look at their hands.
So that’s what I did in this shot. I think this old gentlemans age and character were as present in his hands as they were in face.
Comments, feedback etc. welcome :)
Not Pete the blokeParticipantHi Ciaran
I like the idea behind this shot, and agree that hands can be full of ‘character.’ However there is something about this particular attempt which does not work for me, and on reflection, I think it is probably the side-on approach with the jacket sleeve appearing slightly more in focus than the hands, and the jacket sleeve itself overlapping the main subject.
It is something I would certainly try and try again, as this subject matter could certainly produce a great shot.Ross
ciaranParticipantYup, very fair point. I do think the buttons dominate the shot a little too much :( But now that I have the idea for the shot, I’ll definitely try and shoot a few more of these to see if I can really nail one.
Not Pete the blokeParticipantAnd he looks like someone for whom the offer of a pint of the blackstuff (maybe with a Powers chaser for good measure) might work wonders in terms of ‘modelling’ for you……….
Noely FParticipantI like this shot, lots of character and texture…maybe darken the buttons so they dont seem so obvious?
RobertoMemberI think it’s good photo but not strong enough for me.
The composition and b&w tones are good.
I mean about ‘not strong enough’ that the hands are not interesting enough…..Ciaran, is it you few years ago on avatar?
ciaranParticipantThanks for the comments everyone.

Roberto, it’s not me in the Avatar – I’m WAY uglier :) The avatar is from a picture of a person I took a shot of in the centre of Dublin earlier on this year. I thought he made a better avatar than the last one I was using
RobertoMemberEddieParticipantCiaran.
Love the shot , dont agree with some of the comments. Have to say i like the detail in the buttons, it tells a little about the gent. The texture and cut of the material are also telling. Like how the light twist of the jacket sleeve is reflected in the shape of the hands all adding to make a lovely composition. Super.
AnonymousParticipantI like youre street style Ciaran, when are ye goin to have an exhibition of all your street stuff. I like the hands shot especially the carefull dodge and burn around the hands themselves. That is such a typical way some old fellows lean on their walking sticks! Works for me
The Punk dude scares the be-jaysus out of me and i used to be a mad cure-head! but still i think youre best street shot is that of the homeless boy sitting down!
Ben 8)stuttterMemberwjklewisMemberHi Cairian
I agree with stutter I like the detail. The picture tells its own story! The B7 W conversion is great.
I know you were using FILM recently, how is that going any further images?
Just a little off subject. You have posted your photo as an image within the body of your text, I like that. I had a post going over the past few days regarding this and despite some valiant attempts, didnt really get it resolved. You have done it twice in this post. How do you do that? Your help would be appreciated.
John.
AnonymousParticipantDid any of you notice the hands tattooed on the punks head..really interesting as i wonder why they are in handcuffs. There you have it two distinct pairs of hands each telling a unique story.
Ben 8)Mick451ParticipantThat’s a very good shot, Ciaran.
Personally I would have cropped it different; I prefer the 3 to 4.5 to 8 to 5, which I find too narrow, but that’s merely a comment on personal preference and not a criticism. I do feel there’s too much mid-tone range on the left which lessens the focus on the hands somewhat. I like the buttons being there and the sleeve overlapping the fingers, it looks natural and unposed.ciaranParticipantThanks for the comments everyone, they’re much appreciated.

Ben 8)The exhibition is a while off yet Ben :) That punk guy, contrary to his appearance was SO polite and obliging.. very much a lesson in never judging a book by it’s cover! Thanks again for the comments

Work has been pretty hectic recently and I’ve found it hard to find time for any kind of photography, let alone getting back out with film. I haven’t given up on the idea of shooting more B&W but it’s on hold for now. As soon as I have new images, no doubt I’ll post them :D

When you post a new thread or reply to an existing one, along the top of the page are buttons like
B i u Quote Code List List= Img URL
Simply click the “Img” button, then paste in the full URL of the image and then click the “Img” button again. Job done! Thorsten, Ali and Mark will all probably be able to give you clearer instructions because they seem to have figured out a way of pasting the code into a window without it becoming a link :?: So if my instructions aren’t clear, I’m sure if you ask one of them, they’ll help you out.

I can’t see the hands Ben? But what I did find interesting was a tattoo on the back of his head. He has a tattoo of a punk with a mohawk haircut. A self portrait :!:

Mick, I do plan on looking at a different crop for this, as a few people have sent on their ideas for a crop and some of them work a lot better than this one. When I’m doing it, I may play around with the contrast too. Thanks for the comments.
