has anyone dealt with Pixmania?

MelKParticipant
Has anyone ever bought a camera from Pixmania? I just bought a Canon 400d which i was delighted to receive today. however it came with instruction manuals and software etc in French, italian and german. Unfortunately my lanugauge skills are limited to english. And also the power cord looks like it is for french power points and there’s no warranty card! Now i was looking for a number on their website but no such luck – only some toll free number if calling from inside the UK. Anyway sent an email no response – then found another website with loads of people complaining about Pixmania and their after sales service. For example Pixmania not sticking to their warranties, charging extra money on credit cards the list goes. I wish i had seen this earlier. I so wanted to use my camera today but best to leave it all wrapped up. :(
MelKParticipantok i just got a response from Pixmania. and apparently they stated the manual would be in french on the tech specs – i should have taken a closer look at the tech spec but i was distracted by the pretty camera. and that an adapter should have been included and will be sent.
what else did i say about them hmm oh and there is no warratnly card included but the invoice will be sent in the post. and also that the software is in english. very embarrassed. so i take it all back.FrankCParticipantPixmania supply French versions of the Manuals and Power lead (this is mentioned on their website).
Sometimes the manual also has an English version, if not it is pretty much always available to download from the manufacturers website.
If the kit doesn’t include a UK/Ireland style power lead, they usually include a suitable adaptor.
I either cut off the French plug or keep it for when I travel to the mainland, rather than use the adaptor.Pixmania have pretty good prices, but many people seem to have problems in dealing with their after-sales service people. To a large extent, I think this is just because they have a large number of customers, and you tend to only hear about the complaints.
I have bought a few things from them with no problems. They wouldn’t be at the top of my list for online shops, but would be in the top 10 or so.
PeteTheBlokeMemberI complained to Paypal because Pixmania have a Paypal logo in their list of payment methods, but you can’t use Paypal when you get to the checkout. I also noticed that some items are different prices in different places on their website.
The camera I bought seems grand and they included an adapter for our sockets even though there was no power lead (and no need for one).
I haven’t looked at the manual – it’s a present for Xmas.
I do get a fair bit of spam from them and the “unsubscribe” page is not working.
tara1MemberI bought from Pixmania……..price was the same as others………delivery in 3 days and it DID arrive in 3 days and was completely tracable all the way.
Manual in French but instructions easily downloaded from Canon.
Bought off the special offers attached with sale and Pixmania contacted via email and did exactly as they said they would and on time aswell.
My experience with them 100%.
jlangParticipantI’ve used or recommended others to use pixmania about 4 times. The website seems a bit more P&S oriented than the German online retailers technikdirekt/ac-foto against which I end up doing regular price checks (or did until I bit the bullet a while back).
Never had any problem with delivery etc, although once the item was out of stock upon ordering and this wasn’t communicated clearly enough to the buyer until the order was processed – still arrived in 10 days though. You’ve got to be aware that the manuals, power connections etc are for the French market. If the manual is in one big book with all the languages then that’s great, but the more complex the camera functions, the less likely that is going to be the case.MelKParticipantthanks everyone. that has put my mind at ease about pixmania. they are getting an awful slagging on this other website – maybe i should forward Pixmania customer care the link to the website. i should have seen that the manual would be in french and that you can download a version in english. however it is harder to read off screen and i am not about to print a 180 A4 size pages off. :) and the power cord etc is easliy sorted. anyway now i can get on with taking some nice shots and hopefully have something good enough to post here :D
clawlessParticipantMel,
Just about to post the same query as you.
Got new canon from AC Foto, great service etc, but manual arrived in German.
Went onto Canon to download as per answers to your query but looks like you have to pay? Am I looking in the wrong place??

EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi / EOS 400D DIGITAL Instruction Manual (PDF, 5.20 MB)its free!
cheers,
melps – sorry but i have just assumed you bought a 400d?
lahinch_lassParticipantI got my camera from pixmania as well… the camera arrived safe & sound .. the fact the manual would be in French was most certainly not mentioned !
I have noticed that they do now note which languages the manual is in on the listings. The complication in may case was that I bought a Minolta… no manuals online in europe, luckily a helpful sole on a photography forum provided me a link to the US equivalent which was freely available. On the power adapter – I hadn’t noticed the 3-pin adapter initially in the packaging, but soon located it.
A work colleague recently bought a camera from them, and bought a “package” which included a camera bag … unfortunately the bag was totally the wrong size/type for the camera it was packaged with ! His package was also missing the plug adapter for the charger.
joe_elwayParticipantI tested them out way back when buy buying a cheap tripod.
They failed, miserably. I got a mail confirming the item had shipped with DHL (who I also disklike) and supplied a tracking number. The DHL website informed me it was an invalid number. I waited a week, then two weeks. No delivery.
I called DHL to find out what the story was. They checked the tracking number. It was one they had given out. They give out blocks of them to clients for future usage and they are activated by clients when the number ships on an item. They asked for my vendor and my address. They confirmed that nothing had been picked up from Pixmania for me.
I smelled a rat. I looked for ways to contact Pixmania by phone but none were on the site that I could find. That’s not a good sign. I found an email address and mailed them with soething like “either get the product to me now, refund me or my credit card company will be starting an investigation”. A day later I got another shipping confirmation mail with a valid tracking number. DHL delivered it a day or two later.
Would I recommend Pixmania? Hell No! Some of that cheese stinks pretty bad. And they’re pretty expensive too.
