Did these at work today and I must admit in a bit of a rush as they were all in a hurry to go out for thier dinner I assume :)
Anyway all were shot using stage lights which were diffused through a very very large piece of white material behind me using a d700 and a 50mm 1.4 afd some very modest tweaks in lightroom the background is btw the stage backwall which got covered in paint splashes by set painters so i thought why not use it :).

the moody look to it :) Nicely done, like the black and white.PitmaticMemberThanks Jenny there are colour versions on the flickr stream too but i didnt want to swamp the site
The only downside to using such a large pice of diffusion material is you can see yourself in thier eyes but that can look quite interesting too
Jonnyp16vParticipantsean fMemberjessthespringerParticipantReally very nice portraits… The first really stands out to me, really engaging and has the most pleasing viewpoint.
The second looks like it might need a very slight ccw rotation, and from the second on the viewpoint seems slightly different, like they are somehow looking up at you, slightly more uncomfortable viewing, but maybe that was the point?Anyways, they’re great! Nice work.

kilcourseyParticipantGreat pics, what do you mean by stagelights?
I am thinking about buying lights for about 6 months, cant make my mind up!!!KlarensParticipantPitmaticMemberwhen i say stage lights these were shot on the stage of the Balor theatre in Ballybofey :)
The lighting came from 6 profiles (which non tech theatre people would call spotlights :) ) which were source four zooms 15-35’s which consume 750 watts each and cost about 600+ euros each….. not really the sort of thing you would use in a home studio :)
a pdf spec if you want to learn more about them :)

The main thing with lighting is not what generates the light its how you shape it that counts in this case the light was diffused through a huge projecton screen behind me that gave this even soft light that was not very bright and i could use a nice wide aperture to concentrate on the eyes.
