I had a studio portrait shoot with Helen who has been taking a break from modelling lately. Thankfully she agreed to fulfill an earlier request to re-shoot some ideas from an earlier shoot we had, and I am thrilled with some of the results.
Here is one of the first images I have processed – absolute minimal post-processing involved, just a curves adjustment layer with an ‘s’ curve, some use of spot healing brush on stray hairs, slightly whitened the whites of the eyes and finally boosted saturation.I may not be able to produce landscapes which make me sit back and say ‘I am proud to call that mine’ but I am very pleased with this portrait – essentially because it represents precisely what I set out to achieve. I wanted to capture Helen’s natural beauty in a simple portrait using her long hair to frame her features.
C&C welcome and don’t be afraid to say you don’t like it so long as you can state your reasons why…….
jb7ParticipantLooks good Brandyman,
she’s a lovely looking girl-I’m sure you’ve got more than this-
but the processing and lighting and all the technical bits look great-
can’t wait for more-j

Well I might have a few more……….. Truth be told, when I labelled them in Adobe bridge, I labelled over 60 images from 300+ so there is a fair bit of ‘choosing’ to be done in terms of picking the final images. But it’s a great feeling when you get so many ‘keepers’ from a 2 hour shoot.

ThorstenMemberExcellent work. When I think back to your earliest work that I recall seeing from you these are simply so much better. Just goes to show you what can be done with a combination of persistence, training and most importantly, practice and a will to succeed. Good stuff!
AliParticipantLovely shots Ross, technically super, the second shot is great and the directional light surprisingly works really well. Shadows are great and give great definition to her back.
One thing lets both images down and thats the position of the hands, the difference between great and outstanding. I might suggest cropping the bit of her top you can
see at the bottom of the second shot. Initially i went oooooh lovely implied, seeing the fabric makes me go “ahh thats a pity”.Not Pete the blokeParticipantCheers for the feedback everyone.
Thorsten – practice does indeed bring improvement and obviously I feel that myself, so it is reassuring to hear it from someone like yourself.

freshphotoParticipanttwo very good shots love the even lighting on the skin, one suggestion i would make is perhaps a hairlight to show some of those beautiful curls and make them stand out, but thats a personal thing. well done

These look great to me, but I know nothing. The first one beats the second.
She looks like she’s got goosebumps in the second one – maybe try a warm-up filter?
Not Pete the blokeParticipantfreshphoto – Gerry, I did try a hairlight and hopefully you can see some evidence of it, but it maybe wasn’t as strong as it could have been?
Pete – lol, yes they probably are goosebumps! Shortly after this Helen asked for the heater to be turned on…
Rob and earthfire, thanks for the comments.
Not Pete the blokeParticipantAllinthemindParticipantNicely done Ross, love that last one, overcooked the eyes a touch perhaps, great feel to it though.
SI
freshphotoParticipantthat last shot is a beauty, love the curl.
yeah always turn the hairlight up just enough for the models hair to smoulder (joking) lol
