Hello and a query straightaway!

    Hello there to all,
I have just bought a Canon 650d and have tried the manual and the web for a simple answer to my query but no luck so was hoping someone here might be able to help me! I had a Canon g12 before but on this new Canon I am finding it very tricky to operate the Live View mode. when I use the viewfinder it fires away with no problems but when I switch to LV I really struggle to get the shutter to release! I have the camera in AF mode (when I switch to MF there is no problem at all…..) but the lens just continually seeks to focus without success and will display the exp SIM flashing signal. I am doing this indoors in not really great house lighting so is that the reason or is it to do with the focusing method?? I have the camera set to Aperture Priority always if that is any hint! If there is anyone has any clues to this problem I would appreciate it so thanks in advance and I love the site and hope to get used to it this weekend as I have just joined,
    Thanks

    Hi David,

Welcome to PI and I hope you find the site useful.

Sounds odd that the shutter would fire no problem except when you use live view especially if the scenarios are the same.
    Hopefully John’s suggestion will help.

    Keep us posted.

    All the best.

    John.

I don’t have the model you have but have you tried focussing with AF-on button instead of the shutter button when using live view ?

    Hi,

I agree that the problem is likely to be inadequate light for the autofocus to work.

    I suggest:
    1. Try selecting just 1 central autofocus point
    2. Increase the light in the room
    3. Fit a Speedlite flash with an infra-red AF assist beam. This is great for focusing at night in general.
    4. Enlarge the image to 10x by pressing (twice) the button with a + in a magnifying glass and focus manually

    Best of luck
