I just came across your forum as i was researching a career in photography. I am 27 year old and need some advice. I am a beginner when it comes to photography but recently i have noticed how much i could do with a good understanding of the trade.
I currently run a small events company which specialieses in djs for weddings etc. and also write a fishing blog that contains alot of photos.
    The question is:

If i was to get to the standard to take photos for weddings/parties and good enough photos for magazines what would i need to do?

Is it essential to have a qualification from a college?
Am i too old to start now?
Can you self teach using tutorials?
What equipment would be needed to be able to cope with most situations, lens etc?

I have a panasonic lumix but am looking to get a slr over the next few days. Any recommendation?
I have a good grasp of photoshop and my uncle is a stills photographer in the film industry and offered to help train me.

Is it something that i could do well in or is the industry quite full up?

I know its prob alot to ask but any help would be great.

    Kind Regards,
    Rob

Welcome to the site Rob, I am not qualified to answer all your questions, but here are my
views for what they are worth.

Qualifications are not a necessity, if you have a good eye for a photograph have a good
knowledge of your equipment and its limitations, then no not a necessity.
No you are not too old……..never too old to learn new things, if you are passionate about
    photography then go for it.
Perfectly possible to self teach, join a camera club a wealth of information available from
other members, and you have your uncle for back up!
A decent body (camera that is  ) a 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 a telephoto a flash the list is
endless of course and the more you have the more you will want, try to decide what you really
want to get into and buy accordingly, buy the best lenses you can afford they will last you a
lifetime, buy a second hand body you will probably change and “upgrade” often.

As for room in the industry…….havent a clue but surely there is always room for someone
with a new approach, dedication, and willing to work all hours  The best of luck and
look forward to seeing you post some pictures soon.
