Welcome to the site. I’m getting a 40D myself in a few days, have a 350D already and it’s a great camera. more than adequate for getting great quality shots, so the 400D is even better. The 40D is a bit more professional so if you’re not planning on making a career out of photography the 400D is more than enough for your needs. Whichever one you go with you’ll be a very happy snapper. Look forward to seeing your images.
My advice fwiw is go for the 40D, not that the 400D is bad but I would think in a short while you will want to upgrade and what’s the sense in paying so much for the lesser of the two when you could start at the top.
You can buy the 40d with the 17-85 IS-USM 1:4-5.6, which is a top class lens and would do for a lot of stuff until you get more experienced.
Whatever you do, make it wise… best of luck and post many images… welcome to the site

I heard the kit lenses arn’t that great, from what i’ve been reading off websites you would be better off buying a body with like a sigma lens or something?
Sander, if you can afford it yes. Body plus Sigma, but the standard kit lens will be fine for starters. I know a guy who has got 3 distinctions in City and Guilds photography course using only kit lenses, so there are fine for getting to grips with learning. From what you’ve said in this thread I don’t see why a standard kit lens won’t be what you want. If after 3-6 mths you feel you need to upgrade at least you’ll understand why.
cool, thanks very much for that. I just need to actually go in to a camera shop, and use one with a kit lens if id be allowed to do that, see what you can do with them :)
