My name is James Mahon from Athy in Co. Kildare. Although I owned a Canon Powershot S45 since 2004, up until last August, I never knew Manual mode existed let alone ever having used it. All that changed when I attended the World Athletics Championships in Berlin last August. My seat was located directly behind the photographers. Over the week I was fascinated by their equipment and technique. During beaks I got talking to some of them. That started my interest in serious photography. When I returned home I put my new found knowledge to the test. I soon began to realise the huge potential of Manual mode. So the bug has bitten. I still have my trustworthy S45 and I will keep it, but after scrounging and saving for the last few months I finally purchased some new gear. Following a lot of online searching and speaking to countless photographers I went for the Nikon D700. I also bought a 50mm 1.4G, a 24-70 2.8 and 70-200mm 2.8. I got it on Friday and spent most of the weekend trying everything out. I have been a lurker on this site for the last few months and have decided to sign up now.
