Hello all. This is my 1st post here even though Ive been a member since last year (getting ideas/help etc.). Ive been taking photos for 4 or 5 years now but never really did anything with them so maybe it’s time to start putting them out there and get some objective feedback. Id love if anyone could give opinions or constructive criticism on these few shots for starters anyway. Hopefully sizes are acceptable and I havent posted too many in 1 post.
Thanks in advance – looking forward to becoming part of the group here :D

Welcome along Mark, I like all four!

    1. I would have liked to see in colour the sky looks really interesting and I think colour would have
    shown this more.
    2. Maybe a little dark and might have looked better in landscape format, portrait tends to “cut” it off
    a little.
    3. Very nice, again a little on the dark side?
    4. My favourite again a fantastic sky, a tad over saturated?

    Just my opinion :)

I think they are all stunning and my fav are 2 and 3. I love dark B&W photos. In the first one it would be good to see a bit more detail in the stonework. In 4 I like the amazing cloud formations brought out by the blue sky. The colouring of the grass draws you up to the castle. lovely pictures.

#1 a great sky, I’d like the house pictured at an angle, though, but thats just me. And re #4 it’s too saturated and I’d have gone for placing the tower at one side or the other, not n the middle. Is that a slight halo round the tower? Feel free to ignore my opinions!

Agree with Jenny quite a bit. My favourite is No 3. It’s such a typical type of Irish cloudy daylight. What I like most about it is the differing shades of gray throughout and that lone tree is nicely placed in the composition.

I like the composition in all four of them. My favorite is Doonagore Castle, been there twice last year, love it! …even though I prefer BW. Crazy cloud in no.1, makes all the difference. Really nice work, Mark.

Wow, didnt expect those comments. Thanks all, for the compliments as well as the suggestions.
Just a few comments on the shots themselves…
    1. Cottage was taken in Turkey last year but I treated it to an infrared affect in Elements. Trust me, its not as impressive or dramatic in colour. And yes Pixelle, it would look better at a slight angle but considering the backdrop of holiday apartments, this was the only angle I had. You might be right about stonework as well Connie – possibly lost detail in processing.

    2. One of my earlier attempts on Ring of Kerry so maybe not quite up to scratch. I do love the cloud movement in it though. Also I tend to make my b&w’s a bit dark (personal preference) so maybe I should hold back a bit with the burning tool. Saying that, each screen displays differently.

    3. Taken about 2 years ago somewhere between West Cork and Killarney – really wish I could remember where as I’d love to revisit it. Im sure there were more shots I didnt spot. Anyone else get too excited when they come across an unexpected gem of a scene???

    4. Doonagore Castle, Co. Clare – This is an image I really would have binned as (like Pixelle said) the composition isnt quite right. But it was one of my first trials using the Topaz Adjust Plug-In that I bought recently and I loved the almost HDR affect it produced. It really is a look you either love or hate. For me it almost looks surreal but I suppose it still doesnt make it a great shot – just cheating with colour. And thanks for pointing out the halo around the tower Pixelle (again! :D ). Hadnt spotted it.

    Cheers,
    Mark
