I am currently shooting with a Canon 500D and a basic 55-250 lens. I plan to upgrade to a better lens and body when funds allow and I think I will upgrade the lens first. I am looking at a 70-200 L Canon lens. My main purpose will be motorsport photography, so I don’t think I will need IS as I use a shutter of 1/500 or more where light allows. I think I would need a 2.8 lens to allow greater shutter speeds and also to allow room to manoeuvre as regards getting enough light if I want to use a teleconverter. Am I right in thinking I would need a 2.8? My current lens is f4.5-5.6 and I do struggle for enough light even at 1/500 at times. Am I also right in thinking I wont need IS at these speeds? Also, from reading reviews the Canon 70-200 f2.8L USM was released in 1995, is this correct? Surely a lens of that age is hardly still very good these days or am I mistaken? Any advice or guidance would be appreciated!
Hi Paddy. The 70-200 is a great lens. You are correct in a lot of your assumptions and you do need a 2.8.
An updated version of the lens has been released more recently. http://www.dpreview.com/news/2010/1/5/canon70200isii
