Help – duotone / sepia split-toned

    Eddie, Fintan, thefizz… anyone!!!

I have these super cute split-toned (sepia) prints – 12×16 – all fresh from my darkroom time in Paris.
I thought… hey! I should put copies up on my website. My loyal readers are bound to want to see ’em!

But… I don’t know how to recreate in PS.

I’ve scanned the negatives, and tried a couple of color combos in the duotone setting, but it’s not working for me.
The duotone seems to apply all over the print, but I want my shadows black, and my midtones brownish, and my highlights cream.

Also, the duotone setting applies downwards through the layers, so I can’t leave my bottom layer black and mask out what I don’t want.

Is there some other PS wizardry I can apply to recreate the physical prints. Everything I try is not even close.

Should I abandon the duotone settings and just paint and mask on separate layers?

    Many thanks
    Catherine.

is there somewhere that has a scanning service??

as you wouldnt need that hi-res scans if its only for web use so should be too expensive

    Catherine,

Cant help as i only do basics in Photoshop. I have however copied 16*12 prints with a digital point and shoot. The results were good enough for the web. I used two lights at right angles to the print. This was an infrared and was quite grainy. Its worth a try.

    Wahhhhh….

    :-(

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

My digital camera is still with Canon Ireland for repair… (been there since May!!!) … hopefully it comes home in the next few weeks. My sister has a crappy flatbed scanner, and since I need low res I might take myself over there and try it (of course, I have to get past the scary cows!!!)

Was going cross-eyed with the PS this afternoon; will try again tomorrow.

PS Addicted to toning. Can’t wait to try some other toners!

Great to see you trying the toning Fluffy. Your sisters flat bed should be good enough for wed display but I doubt it is big enough?

Perhaps you might get a broader response in the digital forum. It is fundamentally a digital question you are asking. I think the easiest thing is simply to photograph them. If your camera remains out of action and you’re still in Passage West, then perhaps I could drop by some time and photograph them for you, although I’m going to be a bit busy over the next 2-3 weeks and probably won’t even see your reply to my suggestion as I’m off on a business trip tomorrow and don’t get back until Sunday. If you photograph them on a dry but overcast day, the light should be quite suitable, particularly if the images are for web display only.

    Thx, Thorsten,

I couldn’t decided where to post this! In the end, I wasn’t sure that the dig forum would know what split toning is… I will take my question over there, too!

    Have a great trip,

    Catherine
