help for an amateur, anybody?

I’m no landscape guy but rule number one…..straighten the horizon, It’s the first thing people see
carlParticipantSandra, do you have colour versions of these images. I know there is blue sky there and I love BLUE sky.
andy mcinroyParticipantHi Sandradee, first off, we are all amateurs here (as far as landscape is concerned), so don’t worry. You could probably count on your two hands the number of professional landscape photographers in the UK and Ireland and even they might technically be called “landscape photography writers”. If they couldn’t write they wouldn’t be professional landscapers thats for sure!!
Anyway, back to your images. I will tell you now that you are going to have a difficult but wonderous time ahead of you. These images are technically flawed in a number of areas but you are going to have great fun improving on these and I will guarentee that you will see improvements fast if you take on board the comments here.
My comments
– The horizon is skewed, invest in a spirit level for your hotshoe if you have trouble by eye.
– The foreground is out of focus, put your camera on a tripod and stop your aperture down to get a better depth of field.
– Poor light, photographing in the middle of the day creates harsh, flat images.
– Unbalanced composition, bottom heavy and no real subject. A subject could be as simple as a larger rock that stands out in the frame.
– Overexposed sky, eventually you can buy a graduated filter to fix this, but in the meantime I would recommend you expose for the brightest part of the scene and try to pull some shadow detail out later on the computer..Apart from that it’s brilliant. Seriously though, at least you are thinking about your foreground. When I started photography I was taking boring view shots with no foreground interest or depth at all. Good start.

Brian_CParticipantHey we’re all hear to learn, I certainly am. Sandra I think you have the basics for sure here. Foreground left is a little blurred. I think your skewed horizon is probably due to your lense, At a guess it’s a lower end the market jobbie. I know this because it happens to me. I’m forced to use an 18 year old lense on my new camera due to my Sigma not working on the new digi camera. Horizon’s can be corrected in Photoshop.
I think you’ve made a good image which could be improved if you could revisit the location, making some minor adjustments.
