Hi all.. I really hope someone can help..
I was at the munster game last weekend but due to the rain couldn’t take pictures after the 2nd minute of the game.
Does anyone know of anyplace in the mid-west that supplies those rain-cape/sports shield covers for SLR’s ?
Ideally one for a Minolta or Canon. My own camera is a Minolta with a 75-300mm lens, but I have access to a Canon 300d with a Sigma 100-400mm lens.

I have posted this query in the “Equipment Wanted” section of the forum as well.. but I thought up here I might get more active responses..
    thanks all !

oh yeah, and one of the shots from the weekend..

    Hi ya!

Best rain covers available are Aqua Techs…they are real pricey though. Not sure what stores will stock them, but the web is your best bet. Ebay has a load of camera rain covers, probably your best bet really. Canon do covers but I’ve never seen them in shops (Canon services at the Japanese grand prix are brilliant…that’s where I got my covers).

    Hope this helps,

Thanks Mark ! I’ve told my dad to order one of the Aqua Tech covers from “cameras underwater” in the UK… we’re just hoping it will actually fit the lens he has for his Canon. At least he can claim back the VAT on it, which I wouldn’t be able to do.
Even if I’m only getting his camera once in a while, he’ll still need that cover for the Surf photo’s he does. I’m just suprised he didn’t get one before now.

I have an aqua tech cover for my Nikon D2H and a 70-200 lens,
I got mine from Barker Photography in Cork. It is very very good at keeping the rain out.
The only draw back id that it is very difficult to zoom if need.

definitely a consideration ken .. won’t be an issue for surf photography as usually I’m using max zoom, but for the rugby it’s a definite issue.
I got a marine cover for my own camera, and used it for the first time at last night’s munster game .. wasn’t too bad if I had the zoom at max, and then had to pull back, but going to other way definitely not too easy.

Due to get the aquatech cover next week, but I’m unlikely to be using it for rugby anytime soon.
I’m holding off on getting on for the minolta .. will need to get a better lens first, and will order the cover then.

the pro photographers must had a bit of a laugh at me yesterday .. juggling 3 cameras and being utterly paranoid about getting the 2 borrowed kits wet..
Ah well at least I know the players like my pictures.

I know some pro photographers that just use a zip lock bag around the camera and lens.
They tear an opening for the lens and voila. :)

I’ve tried it and it works.

the ziplock might work on a short lens … can’t imagine it being a great solution for the longer zooms.
Certainly didn’t see any of the 12 photographers at the munster game using ziplocks, or anything similar.
Though at the away game last weekend a couple of the local guys did have various plastic bags over their kits. And that downpour was serious… though the lack of wind would have simplified the protection needed.

Heavy rain, without wind is not a normal occurance though, and the plastic bag solution won’t work too well in windy conditiions, or at least not without quantites of duck tape being involved.

I actually use a plastic sleeve we use in work, they cover from wrist to elbow to stop oils getting on your overalls when machining, they fitted my 75-300 but have not tried them on my 100-400 yet.If anyone wants to try them out give me a shout and I can see if i can get some. They are used once then thrown away by myself, sorry recycled

update for those who might be interested.
Dad got the aquatech, and I put it to the test at the European Junior Surf Championships last week .. not during any major weather though, but seems to be ideal for the camera. I would agree with the zoom concern though. The Sigma lens I was using doesn’t actually physically move when you change the zoom, so no sortof push-pull mechanism available as an alternative.

My cheap & cheerful minolta lens with it’s waterproof bag-style cover I can do a certain amount of the push-pull stype of zooming with which means not having to open the cover to change the zoom.
both options work, but I think the aquatech is probably the better solution when It’s available for your kit.
