    Hi!
    (Back after a long absence!)

I have some blobs on my Canon 300D kit wide-angle lens & it needs cleaning. I dont want to risk even trying it myself, so I need to get it cleaned somewhere as I have reluctantly agreed to do two weddings in the next couple of months (but thats another story)..
I live in Athlone & have asked all the camera shops here, and none of them offer a cleaning service. A year or two back, I took it into a camera shop in Mullingar that said they would clean it – but they ended up sending it off somewhere in Dublin anyway, and it was very expensive.
I will be in Dublin for the weekend coming, so I thought perhaps I could leave it in somewhere. So (hmmm, a very long winded way of asking a question, I know).. does anyone know of anywhere in the Santry/Swords/Airport area of Dublin that I can get my camera lens cleaned???

    Help much appreciated!!

Are they internal or external on the lens ? If they are external then cleaning fluid and a lens cloth should do the trick.

    Internal, unfortunately

Its a big job then. The lens will have to be striped down. Depending on the value of the lens it may not be economical to do the job. You discribe them as “blobs”. The only time I’ve ever seen blobs on a lens was when the element coating was damaged. The only other problem I’ve had with my Bronica lenses in the past was fungus growth on the internal elements which cost me about £370.00IR to get cleaned and serviced (2 lenses) back in 1992. Fungus is quiet common in a lens and I’m told it happens when there is poor circulation of fresh air around the lens. It looks like a web effect inside the lens.

Look at what it would cost to repair and check the price of a new lens and decide which is most economical. If I saw the lens I’d know better what is wrong.

I see you are in Athlone and I’m there tomorrow (Tuesday 8th) doing a wedding in the Hodson Bay. Will be free at about 5.00 if you wish to give me a shout PM me and I’ll give you full details.

If you are talking about the non-IS EF-S 18-55mm kit lens you will probably be better of buying a second hand one rather than getting it cleaned.
You might be able to get one for €40 or less here on the forum.

Only just saw the last few replies :?
I noticed that I had an old email address registered, so no wonder I wasnt getting any email notifications of replies.. DUH!!!

Thanks for the info – I did indeed just buy another lens from someone on the forum – got a quote for cleaning of at least €140, so it was absolutely more economical. Its not even a great lens, its just all I can afford at the moment!!
How did you get on with the wedding in Athlone, GCP?!
