Help! How much to charge?
-
MichellaParticipant
I’ve been conatcted by a magazine in America asking for permission to use two of my images. Of my dog Holly. On facebook of all places!
‘non-exclusive right to use, publish, reproduce, modify, adapt and distribute your Image(s) at any time in any manner or medium whether existing now or yet to be developed, including without limitation use in print, presentations, Internet, electronic, wireless, television, mailed promotions, exhibits and press releases. Wherever feasible, shall credit the photograph.’
I don’t have a clue how much to charge so any advice would be helpful.
Michelle.
AlessiaParticipantI knew Holly it’s amazing but now it seems she’ll become a star ;)

Standard use is 2 media, for 1 year, in 1 country.
So the more they want, over and above this, the more you should be charging. They are currently talking about massive usage here – so your fee should reflex that.
AedanCParticipantI’ve seen people mention a pricing calculator on Alamy.com, but I’ve never tried it myself.
Well done!

Hey Ashley, are you talking about the BUR guide here?
Michella.Yes.
The Base Usage Rate (BUR) is a very good system to use, when negotiating a fee for the use of any image you produced.
Means you aren’t just pulling figures out of the air and the fee takes into account your production costs, as opposed to just any old costs for any old image. So you start by letting them know what the BUR figure is – and what that means in terms of Media Use, Period of use & Territory.
Then let them know what the fee would be for what they have asked for – stating the Media use, Period of use & Territory. They should see it’s all the additional use that they have asked for, that has hugely increased the fee – so may come back and say: “well, what if we only wanted XYZ… what would that be?”
So the BUR well help you negotiate a fee – rather than just blindly quote a figure – based on a logical system.
Plus it’s backed by the AOP.
