I have an EOS 1000D I currently shoot mainly rugby with a Canon 70-300 F4-5.6, which is ok for bright days but on the darker days or evening its not enough.
You really should go for the Canon 400mm f/2.8 IS L lens, or else a Canon 300mm f/2.8 IS L.
Ok, ok ….. personally, I’d always go for the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. Brilliant quality, brilliant build, weather sealed, and it lasts. I haven’t read many bad reviews about the Sigma though, and know it’s much cheaper than the Canon version.
I wouldn’t be too concerned about IS/non-IS since mostly you’ll be using shutter speeds fast enough to negate camera shake.
Haven’t won the lotto YET!! Budget doesn’t stretch as far as a Canon F2.8 but I will get there some day, just for the moment its either the Sigma F2.8 or the Canon F4.
I got the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 couldn’t afford the canon F2.8 IS, had the 70-300 F4-5.6 and traded it in against the new lens. Have only been out once so far with it and have to say I am loving it.
