Help! Loose tripod leg…

  • Well after the recent tripod thread I decided to invest in a nice new set of legs and head. Went for the Manfrotto 488 RC2 head paired up with the 190 XPROB legs. Bought them locally and just got home to attach the head and have a play around. Unfortunately one of the legs is very loose, it seems to flap about and whilst it clicks out to the leg angle required it doesn’t hold this position. The other two legs are quite stiff but smooth, I’m assuming they should all be the same? Can anyone confirm if it sounds like Ive got a faulty one? Any easy fix I can do at home or is it a trip back to the shop? Ta in advance…

I would bring it back to the shop as any attempt to rectify it yourself might void any warranty that’s on it.

That doesn’t sound right at all. Bring it back, they should replace it for you, by law they have to give you a refund if the item is faulty.

    It shouldn’t be an issue.

That just reminds me to tighten one of the legs on mine

I have the 190xb which I think is the same
at the top there is a 4mm allen key bolt just give it a turn until you get the desired stiffness

Thanks for the quick replies, really appreciate it. Cathal I had a quick look at the allen bolt that screws down in to the loose leg. The bolt itself is indeed loose, but it doesn’t actually tighten with the allen key. I suspect that it either isn’t catching on what it is threaded in to, or else the thread is stripped.

I get the feeling owning a Manfrotto might be like owning an Alfa Romeo? ;)

Tried to phone the shop but they must be closed for the day. Will phone back tomorrow and see how I get on, fingers crossed for some good customer service!

    Got my replacement 190XPROB yesterday.

+1 to the sales guy who ordered the replacement legs and didn’t insist on me returning the item to the store first. Saved me a return trip and I’m happy to have it all sorted within 7 days.

-1 to the manageress who stood beside the sales guy at the till and did her best to make me feel that there was nothing wrong with the item and I was just being fussy. Her attitude alone put me off going back again…

If you can think of a photography store that advertises as being “it’s where the pros go”, and to be honest I don’t think this is too far wrong, because as an amateur photographer I didn’t feel particularly welcome. Pity.

Great to hear you got it sorted. Pity though that you were “not worthy”. A lot of places like that around. I often find that the supervisors / managers in some of these places really don’t have a clue about the products they sell and assume that the sales assistant doesn’t know what they are doing.
