IrisParticipant
I exhibited 10 large format photos (mixed media) during a local arts festival in my home town recently and it went down very well. I sold all but two of the photos, ranging in prices from €150-€450 which i was extremely happy about and i received some good press as well, which is always a bonus. I have been asked to do something similar next year for the festival, and since the exhibit i have been asked by a few friends and friends of friends to take photos for them. But here’s the thing, all of my exhibit shots had been taken on a Cannon powershot SD870is 8mb (AKA) IXUS 860is which i must say is a fantastic camera for a point and shoot camera i would highly recommend to anyone whether your a pro or a novice, but could you imagine me arriving at my friends child’s christening, or conformation or family gathering and every one is lined up and i pull out my small point and shoot, i can hear the gasps already “My God Look at the size of that”. But its not just that. The flash wouldn’t be strong enough for large group shots inside, and i have been meaning to step up to the mark now for awhile and go semi/pro. so i am looking for some suggestions on a Digital SLR camera and equipment around 10mp or so, i am willing to go up to the €1000 mark if i have to, or do i..? probably would like to stay with cannon but its not a priority, i would buy a Nikon as well. I have started taking photos of trees recently and landscapes, so this is something i probably would like to do more of, as well as people and occasions, but that’s probably more of a lens choice. so if anyone has any suggestions on what would be a good buy. i would be grateful, and thanks for your undivided attention, it was a long post. Cameras i own, Pentax ME super and Powershot SD870is.
cathaldParticipantHi Iris
I started of in dslr with a nikon d40 which was ok i got a nikon d200 in june which i am ver happy with
the d200 can be got for around €500 for a decent second hand one and then you have another €500 for a lens
get a look through the for sale section here as some of the folks sell some good well looked after gearCathal
PixelleMemberWhen I went DSLR in 06 I checked out Canon and Nikon, and eventually went with the Nikon. However if I were starting now I would look at the Sony range too, partly for the articulated LCD which makes a lot of sense particularly with live view.
Congrats on your arts festival results.You are right that people are impressed by camera size.:)
ben4130ParticipantPersonally, id stick with canon or nikon, nikon being my weapon of choice. Both companies have great reputations and the second hand market is flooded with bodies lenses and accessories. youre bound to pickup a bargain here on on ebay.
MadeleineCalaidoWeberParticipantI can’t suggest a camera for you. I am from the canon family and this here is a fantastic link for diffent slrs and lenses..

Just one important thing! Make sure that you put attention to the lenses ( 2-3 ). I recommend
a wide angle, a 50mm and a tele zoom (like 70-200mm) but of course, it depends of your budget – so be carefull with using all money just for the camera (;
