Help. Printing Hell.

I’m at the end of my patience with trying to do my own printing. Please can someone help to find what I am doing wrong.
I have a HP B9180 printer. Not the best in the world but it has good reviews and I have seen some impressive prints from it. I have been recommended several times to use Hahnemuhle paper to get superior results. I ordered Photo Rag Bright White (http://www.hahnemuehle.com/index.php?mid=1787&lng=en&pkat=309) from a reading this (http://maxradi.us/photos/B9180_Paper/#matte ) and I have seen prints on this paper and was impressed.
I downloaded the paper profile from the Hahnemuhle website and printed from photoshop with this profile….. It prints like I drew on the back of a cornflakes box. Lifeless washed out colours and no detail at all. What the hell am I doing wrong? I’m tired of throwing money at this problem and not fixing it.

I suppose the first thing to check is if you’re printing on the coated side…
Yeah, I actually didn’t print coated side first but then tried other side. Not much difference really between the both.
That’s the only thing that occurred to me from your description-
I use Epson, so I don’t know your printer-Someone will be along shortly, no doubt…
. . .someone will probably be along after me . . .
Did you try a process of elimination?
Pop in some of your standard stock and see what comes out.
Try printing without the special paper profile.Dont have any hard answers but just thought I would throw that into the pot!

Yeah going through the options now. I have printed with the HP Advanced Gloss which is the preferred HP Gloss and it was fine.
Just another thought,
Is the special paper especially thick? will your printer take such stock?
Are the inks compatible?

Yeah, I researched the paper types and compatibility before buying. It’s highly recommended for this printer. I printed an A3 now with a different Hahnemuhle paper (another smooth photo rag) with a different profile and that worked well. Just need to figure out why the A4 photo rag bright white is coming like muck. If I figure it out I’ll post here.

OK, working now. Possible causes:
1. You need to restart photoshop after loading a paper profile. It is picked up the the HP pluggin but not by photoshop.
2. I printed on back side first then correct side. This may have ruined the coating? Although I don’t know how you are supposed to print some papers on both sides?
3. I think I may have let the printer decide colour management. This time I choose “Let Photoshop Determine..” and choose rendering intent as perceptual with black point compensation.Phil
