I have a friend who uses a Canon EOS 10D (? I think that’s right).
She wants a general purpose long lens to photograph seals and the
odd bird near her holiday home. Under a grand. Any good ideas please?
I’ll be able to show her tripods but I don’t know much about Canon
gear (if you think I should go and research it myself don’t bother answering
because I know that already).nfl-fanParticipantA grand sterling I assume?
If she shops around she should be able to pick up a Canon 100-400 L for under a grand no problem. This is what I use.
Failing that maybe a Canon fit Sigma 50-500mm, cheaper again.

PeteTheBlokeMemberThanks NFL. She’s probably going to buy new, so I’ll check Jessops. Is there a fitting
I need to look for (or avoid) ? All Pentax lenses work on Pentax cameras, but I think Canon
is different?5faytheParticipantHi Pete,
Canon have 2 lens lines. EF and EF-S.
The EF range will fit on all EOS cameras.
The EF-S range is made specifically for DSLRs with the APS-C sized sensor such
as the (ERROR NOT THE 10D), 20D, 30D, 40D, 300D, 450D ….etc.I suppose the only thing to watch out for is that the EF-S lenses are not
compatible with Canon DSLRs with full frame sensors.Hope that helps.
John.
EDIT: Pete looks like I made an error listing the 10D as EF-S compatible.
rc53MemberIf it’s a 10D, then the mount is EF, so the EFS lenses won’t fit — they only fit later models
such as the 20D – 50D series, and the 300D – 500D series. However, all EF lenses will fit on all Canon DSLRs
Which model does she have? — the 10D is quite old now.
aoluainParticipantAn affordable option would also be the 70-200 F2.8 non IS [image stabilization]
and a 2X converter which would be similar to NFL’s 100-400If she cannot stretch to an ‘L’ series lens there is also the 75-300 IS but this is not a great lens.
some of sigmas and tamrons are good also.
PeteTheBlokeMemberThanks folks. I’ll have a chat with her about how much she’s got and point her
in the right direction. Simplicity is the watchword here :)markcapilitanParticipantGet a 300mm F4L. Primes all the way! Stick a 1.4x on when needed. Probably a little over a grand, but worth the extra €.

It’s a good idea. She may need some persuading. I’ll suggest eBay maybe.
Thanks.
rc53MemberUseful info on this site — but perhaps you know this already?
It’s not completely comprehensive, but give a good idea of what the price range is.
http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/
also works with .com
but slightly different
PeteTheBlokeMemberThanks rc. I’ve given her a few pointers and she’ll probably go and get
it herself now. She’s not the kind of person to dump the responsibility on me.Wish I had a holiday home by the sea and a few quids to spend on long lenses :)
lkzParticipantI saw a tip for Canon Lseries whit extender-keep this in mind-
2x extender wont be any good for 70-200/2.8 & 100-400L/4
if she wans to get it for a birds photography, she will need
work whit AF. But AF whit extender on these lenses is not working
(on 2x extender). If she will go for extender – 1.4x will be the right one (works
whit both on AF). If she wans to by a lens around that price tell her
better to take a look for a new camera as well. (like 40D is quite
good)aoluainParticipantThe 2X extender will work with the 70-200 f2.8 as the lens then becomes
esentially an f4 which is fine. The extender will not work with the 70-200 F4 of F4 IS, well it will but it will
fit on but no autofocus.steelydanParticipantCanon 1.4X converter will fit the 70-200 f4 and “Will” auto focus ( I use this combo many times minimum aperture is f5.6)
But the later and more expensive model 70-200 f4 IS the auto focus will “NOT” work
Why is that you may ask?? It stops people buying that combo rather than forking out for the 100-400
Bear in mind the weight issue, if you hold a prime or 100-400 for a few hours you will feel the weight on your arms ( and Im a big guy)
The 70-200 is a lightweight combo and a pin sharp lens, non IS version works great as long as you keep the shutter speed up and can be bought second hand for about €450 or £400 sterling.

Only the 1D series Canons autofocus up to f/8, the others only to f/5.6 — so
this will still autofocus. The quality of the 2x extender is reasonable, but the 1.4x is better
