SteveFEMember
An unusually obliging dragonfly that sat and posed for several minutes without getting freaked out by tripods, lenshoods etc:
PeteTheBlokeMemberBeautiful. They always fly off when I get within 20m of them.
The first 2 shots even makes him look like he’s smiling (in a gormless sort of way).
SteveFEMemberThey usually piss off when I get close too. That’s why I was so amazed to find a compliant sitter ;)
This one had a funny tic where it put its head on one side and grinned like a donkey, but I didn’t catch any good shots of that unfortunately.
RavenAshMemberPeteMcDMemberThese are cracker.
He has a nice smile. You must put him at ease…. ;)
What set up were you using here? One from your manual selection?
RodcunhaParticipantpositronMemberBrilliant set! Never knew they have a little antenna sticking out of their forehead! Amazing detail and sharpness. Is that his meal next to him on the first photo?
Jay KingParticipantGreat shots… lovely clarity and DoF

That made me laugh out loud when I read that…!
RobMemberSteveFEMemberLens used is indeed a manual: Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 90mm f/2.5, with a Tamron SP 01F teleconverter to get a bit of working distance (this TC is good, retains most of the lens’s native sharpness)
ossie13ParticipantMadra RuaParticipantBrilliant Steve!
Great clarity and detail in all of them. But that first one is one of the best dragonfly photos I have seen (…and there are a lot on flickr!)!
Colours and light are great. The DOF is just perfect!
Front legs, eyes, head and protorax with the wing base are nice and sharp and you even got a bit of a gleam in its eyes.
At first I thought the dead fly was distracting, but now I think it adds to the shot.
The body is raised and it looks like it’s ust after taking off.
The best is the composition, though. The angle realy gives depth to the image and gives a sense of size.Only niggle is the missing bits of the wings. A real shame that!
SteveFEMemberThanks Hauke! To be fair there are some bloody stunning shots on Flickr that these don’t even approach, but they’re the best ones I’ve yet done so I’m a proud bunny ;)
Yeah about the wingtips. I was more into getting just close enough to get definition into the eyes without scaring it off.
jb7ParticipantAmazing work alright-
Was he a big one? What’s that at his feet in the first?
Looks a bit like his lunch maybe-j
SteveFEMemberA couple of inches long and same for the wingspan I suppose. Pretty big but I have seen larger.
