Heron – First Post

Hello all
I would like to say hello to all- I have just joined the site, which I found very interesting to look through with a high standard of images on wide subject matter. So here is my first post.. I came across this Heron, in Clonmel near a Weir. It was standing frozen waiting for its Dinner, which came shortly after this was taken. I was using a Canon 1ds Mk2, with a 100-400L lens.I wanted to get the Heron and show the movement in the water, which meant using a slow shutter speed.. However I was not equipped with a Tripod, so I was able to use the Image Stabilizer on the lens to good effect. I think the exposure was around a 30th of a second at 400mm FL, which would not have been achievable without the stablizer.Comments welcome

Welcome to the site & a very good 1st post. Great result from a 400mm 1/30 sec handheld. I would prefer a little more space on the left as the heron is a bit central in frame. Nice movement in the water too. Well doneshutterbugParticipantWelcome to the site Andy, lovely shot Herons are great posers especially
when they are watching a fish, they keep especially still! :)vividimagesMemberAndy, welcome to the site.
A nice Heron shot to start with. Love the movement in the water, but as said just a little to central.
Hope to see some more posts.

ei5jfParticipantHello Mici Jenny.. and Gareth. Really appreciate the comments and time taken to critique the shots. You are of course right about the placement of the Heron, and I think on another forum ( Canon CFF ), I cropped the image and took a little away behind’ the bird..
I was just amazed at the performance of the 100-400 in allowing a long shutter speed ( low ISO ) and stabalizer to get the blurred water…Thanks again

steelydanParticipantThats a great shot using the 100-400 handheld at 1/30 sec. The Heron stands out nicely against the flowing water, also it would have been easy to miss the focus with so much going on in the scene. You did very well
DeeboParticipantWelcome to PI and this is fine first post., Well done and enjoy the site
