heron, killiney beach, last night

I’ll go right ahead and blame my tools again, it’s quite soft, with the canon 80-200 lens. I struggle to use that one without shake, but have been trying it out recently at fairly high shutter apeeds. But it was just nice to have something different to point the camera at.
I’ve kept this one fairly dark since if I brighten it up I lose the golden glow of the sunset. I was surprised to find that there was still a beautiful glow on the horizon over the sea even though the sun set in the other direction…

gerardkParticipantnolongerParticipantI like it. Great composition, great colours. Shame that it’s a bit dark, but as you say – couldn’t be avoided.
LoGillParticipantVery nice – A suggestion…. if you have time to edit it again and crop out the horizon( line of grey at the top), i think it would look cool if you see only water surrounding the bird… it might add a bit of mystery to the shot.. I like it though :)

Funny you should say that, when I was working on it I originally cropped out the horizon and quite liked it. But when I compared the two, it seemed more balanced when it still had it included, I think because it gave a sense of the infinite horizon behind the bird (hmm, that sounds a bit pretentious but I don’t mean it that way, honest)
As for the darkness of the shot… it’ll have to be put down to personal taste I think, if I lighten it, I lose all the atmosphere. When I think of how it actually looked in front of me IRL, it wasn’t brighter than this – in fact I’d possibly say that the bird was almost a silhouette. I think to brighten it up would kill the mood. But thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, people, it’s all stored away in the memory banks for next time I’m out there ;)
AliParticipantReally like this shot and the composition. I actually like the horizon. I think it adds depth to the shot.
Very well done.FajitasParticipantI love the composition of the shot!
you could try brighten it perhaps by using shadow/highlight? But I don’t think that it’s a big deal at all!
LoGillParticipantNope – not a big deal at all :) Its a good shot you should be VERY happy with it :D

MarkKeymasterI like the composition of the photograph, its very pleasing to the eye.
As a ‘wildlife’ photograph though, I’m not sure about it. The colour cast albeit from the natural light doesn’t do anything for me.
The bird is too distant/small in the photograph.Just my 2c worth :)

Cheers, I appreciate that – it was never meant as a real ‘wildlife’ shot though, more just for the overall scene and mood.
MarkKeymasterelvenParticipantMaybe I’ll post it in the “Pictures That Include Creatures Although Not Necessarily Proper Wildlife Shots” forum ;)
snaphappyMembergreat shot. have to agree with logill though i saved it and cropped out the horizon and i have to say I preffered it that way. Dont find it soft either looks sharp to me well done
