Heron Preening a few shots

Sat at the river bank waiting for ages for this Heron to catch some fish but instead it decided to take to the trees in the morning sun to start preening itself.

Pitty it had to land in such a cluttered spot but not much I could do about that on this occassion.

Rather pleased with this lens combo but find im having to use cable release and mirror up to get good sharp images at lower shutter speeds.

    Camera Nikon D300
    Exposure 0.006 sec (1/160)
    Aperture f/11.0
    Focal Length 600 mm
    ISO Speed 720

Editing was in capture nx, cropped, contrast adjustment and resized for web.

    Cheers for looking.

    Nice shot.

But my eyes keep jumping between the big wing on the right and wanting to look at te head and eye on the left.

Focus, light, color all look good. Just something strange and I’ve no idea what smal change might fix it.

The branch over its head might be part of it.

Pelagic, yeah im no sure about any of these two images to be honest, I hate busy backgrounds, focus for each shot was on the head as I was trying to put the emphasis on the preening. Maybe I should have opened up to wide open at 5.6 to just have the head sharp.

Looking at them again I might spend a few mins and selective blur the background and remove that branch in cs5.

Thanks for taking the time to comment, much appreciated.

The feather detail you’ve captured is amazing indeed….700mm lens..I’m intrigued :) Not much can be done about the background really, maybe tighten the crop?
