Hmmmmm this is tough.

SANCHOMember
Finally thanks to some generous parental units and a kind pay cheque from work I can finally get onto the SLR bandwagon. Now I just need to decide which one and in what form and boy is it tough. I was looking at the 350D because it seems the 400D isn’t worth the extra money. So I was thinking of getting the 350D body and a fancy lens. Then I remembered the 20D is probably going for fairly cheap now….And then there’s the D80! Arrrrrrg. Any ideas guys?
JohnnyMcMillanParticipantSANCHOMemberYeah all the pros use Canon, for the full frame sensor of course so twud be wise to invest in their lenses. Now i just gotta pick a body..
PeteTheBlokeMemberrichiehatchMemberHi Sancho…
It has been said many times before here but the best bet would be to get out into a shop and have a good aul feel of the cameras you are thinking off… With my hands there is no way I could use the 350/400D with or without a grip… The 20/30D are just right in my hands while the 5D is sublime…! Ye never know when ye get into a shop ye might prefer the feel of a Nikon, Sony or Pentax to name a few… ask to try as many as ye can…! As I use Canon I would highly recommend either a 20, 30 or 5D but as Pete mentioned certainly dont overlook the Pentax… if only they had a wider range of lens….!
Let us know how ye get on…!

LoGillParticipantI have to agree with ritchie here.. thats very solid advice. Get the available options in your hands for a good feel   I know that sounds more than odd, but different brands and bodies have a completely different feel to them in terms of sturdiness and how intuitive they are for you personally to use etc..
There are loads of threads on the site about this – I’m sure if you do a seacrh you’ll dig up dome more info..
But happy hunting ;)

GCPParticipantWhile I have changed over to the Canon 1Ds MkII, I have to say the colour temp produced by the Olympus E1 is hard to beat. I still love and use my E1’s also.
SANCHOMemberThanks for the info guys, I’ll pop into the shop on Friday and have a good fondle so :D I’ve seen some shots taken with the E1 and it sure produces great results. My budget is aboot 800 Euro so I can’t quite stretch to the 30D and certainly not the 5D and the 1ds Mk II is a pipe dream at the moment. I just want to get onto the DSLR bandwagon and start shooting. I’m studying Journalism and want to get into Photojournalism so I’d like to start off with a fairly decent camera, the best I can get with my budget anyway.
SANCHOMemberokay, it’s between the 350D and 400D. i’m not sure about the 400D, it seems a bit hit and miss whereas the 350D seems to be almost perfect.
davenewtParticipantI have the 400D and, from my limited experience, it seems pretty perfect to me :-)
If that’s any help!
Obviously is a bonus if your wonderful girlfriend buys you one… ;-)
Seriously though, if you have any specific Qs on the 400D, drop me a PM and I’ll be happy to attempt an answer if required.
Good luck,
David.earthairfireParticipantSpend as much money as you have on glass. A 350d with L glass will give much better results than a 1DSmkII with a jam jar on the front!
I’d recommend only looking at other bodies when you NEED to upgrade – i.e. when it has a function that is stopping you from taking the shots you want to.
Hope it helps!

SANCHOMemberWell i took the plunge and got the 350D from Jessops for 655 euros. It’s not too shabby at all and the speed it focuses on a subject is amazing. I’ve never handled a dslr before and the best camera i used before this was my dad’s kodak z740. I think the first new lens i’m going to get is the EF 90-300mm. Halls cameras have it for ?189 which seems pretty reasonable. It’ll be years before i can afford an L series lens although i noticed that sigma have started putting red banding around some of their lenses. So yes i’m finally on the DSLR bandwagon and i must say it’s a delight to be on it :D now all i have to do is buy a larger memory card, a bag, a tripod, a blower, a few filters, some lenses and most of all enjoy myself. I’ll start posting some images as soon as the weather clears up a bit. Thanks again for all your words of wisdom guys.
Brian_CParticipantHey SANCHO, should have investigated the Sony A100. It’s beat the 400d in recent reviews. Anyway, the 350d is no bad thing either and is a very capable camera. Congradulations on your new purchase.
Now regarding a lens. You’ve mentioned the 90-300mm, which due to being used on the cropped sensor of the 350d it’s really a 140-450mm lens, that’s allot of zoom. What are you going to be shooting? If you’re doing something like wildlife or motorsport this will be fine as you wanna get in close to the subject but if you wanna take nice photo’s of say the mountains, landscapes or the beach etc that lens is too long. I have a 17-50 (really 25-75mm) and a 28-200 (42-300mm). The smaller one I use for Landscapes and the larger zoom for m/sport.
What you wanna take pictures of??
mervifwdcParticipantSancho – I’m sure you’ll enjoy it! The only advise I can chip in with is that if you are concidering a 5 or 1 series in the future, dont buy any of the ef-s lenses, only buy what will worth with full frame cameras.
Also, if you bring your body to the camera stores, you can usually try these lenses and see what lengths you might like. Also keep an eye on the 2nd hand shelves as a lot of people start with the 70-300 sigma’s (or similar) and then trade up to other lenses. If you buy from places like Conns (and I’m sure others), they will give guarentee’s with 2nd hand lenses. Now get posting!
Merv.SANCHOMembersorry for not replying sooner, been busy with college stuff. writing i’m afraid not photographing :( Taken a few pics with the camera in the botanic gardens and down the local beach at Portmarnock. Definitely need a longer lens if i’m to shoot those damn pesky (although quite friendly) squirrels in the botanic gardens. I’ll bring nuts the next time. Also invested in a tripod and a shoulder bag. next purchase is the lens and i think i’m gonna go with sigmas 70-300mm options. tis 230 euro which doesn’t seem too bad. after that i’m going to save up for a nice wide angle for landscapes and urban shots. I want to get into photojournalism so any recommended lenses for that field guys?
