Holga?

I have convinced myself that I can not live without a holga
but know flip all about them, was hoping maybe some of you
    could give me some guideance?

Do they come in 35 and 120? Which do most people use?
    Glass or plastic lens?

I like the sound of 120 (because I have not done any medium
format photography) and a plastic lens (is glass a bit like cheating?)

Also I saw a fisheye holga lens on ebay for £17.99 I really like the
loook of fisheye stuff too, anyone have a fisheye for holga?

    Cheers,
    Sinead.

    Hi Sinead,

I use Holga FN (with flash, plastic lens). All holgas are made for 120 film, but they can be very easily transformed to take 35mm film.
Here is a tutorial that shows how to do it: http://shop.lomography.com/holga-backup/35.html You can also find special kits on ebay to modify your holga for 35mm film.

Concerning glass vs plastic, I don’t know anybody with glass lens holga, but considering the overall holga quality the glass lens can’t be much of an improvement.

And finally if you want to have a look at a few shots from my holga: http://vitoldus.deviantart.com/gallery/#Holga

Yes you can get Holga 120 or Holga 135

There are a few flavours of each. In the 120 ones (the more famous one) you have

    N = “Normal”
    FN ,where “F”= Flash
CFN , where C =” Colour” There is a 4 colour flash on those types.

    The 135 comes in

    135 (just a 35mm Holga)
135BC where BC = black corners (mechanical vignetting.)
    135PC, a pin hole version.

There are also other 35mm Holga cameras but these are your regular pound shop type cameras.

And you can also modify your 120 to take 35mm (those shots you’ve probably seen with the sprocket holes visible).

Most people use the 120 but the 135 only came out last year so I’m sure more and more people will use that. Especially when it is easier & cheaper to have 35mm developed.

I have a few 120s with both types of lens. There is not a lot of difference in the quality (or lack there of) in the image.

A great site to learn about Holga is this one –> http://www.squarefrog.co.uk/

You can read a review of the 135BC on this blog –> http://moominsean.blogspot.com/2007/09/introducingthe-new-holga-135bc.html

I could be wrong Sinead, but the last time I was in the Gallery of Photography in Temple Bar, they had a Holga fish eye camera for sale.

Now i might be remembering incorrectly..it could have been a Lomo..but sure..they are all plastic and they all take dreadful (weird and wonderful) shots…

So might be worth checking it out ;-)

Actually forgot you were all the way up in Warrenpoint Sinead..

Be a bit of a haul just on the off chance of picking up a cheap plastic camera…

    Sinead~

If you haven’t convinced yourself it’s worth going wherever you have to for it….let me convince you.

    You’ll love her.

    She is sheer genius.

I have dropped mine on the ground and watched her splinter into shreds…scooped up her pieces and taped her together.

After I saw this thread it inspired me to go out and shoot with her this morning. The drawback..is waiting a week for the 120 to be developed. Instant gratification and all that

    Oh no… is it ok?

    hahaha

Sinead~ works better than ever..the beauty of *cheap plastic camera*

In fact..some of the dedicated and talented users on this site will tell you that you actually should tape areas to disallow some light. I prefer the light leaks..better vignetting etc.

    Go for it..

Now there’s a statement- I might have thought that the glass meniscus might be preferable-
though probably only for sentimental reasons-
I’ve had quite good results from the Holga lens-
    though I can’t remember which one it was- I borrowed a friend’s-
I think I might have assumed it was a glass lensed version-
He bought it in a camera shop-

Sinead, if you just can’t wait,
    have a read of this-
    I found it entertaining anyway-

    Glad it’s ok Sharon.

Interesting read there j, though a tad ott at trying not to conform with those
who were also trying not to conform I thought (it’s late and my head hurts!).

I’m confused by all the different types.. Can aperture and shutter speed be
    changed on them.
    Any suggestions where to shop?

    Sinead.
