I think that one of the best forms of critique, is self critique.

Apologies, John, for not commenting on your images, but a lot of useful critique has been offered and I can’t add much more. I would be sorry too, to hear that you’re thinking of abandoning wedding photography as a result. No – just step back, revise your approach and press on again.

Ciaran’s comment is a very, very important point that deserves another echo.

Forum critique is very useful at various stages. True, you need to develop a sense of discernment for recognising when the critique is valid or just someone else’s taste. But fundamentally it is not possible for a photographer to get more than a measured selection of their images critiqued. (If someone floods a forum with images the comments dry up – especially if they are not offering much critique on the work that others post.)

I think every successful photographer needs to develop a very good level of skill in self-critique – harsh, but not unrealistic. Sometimes a photo is good! They’re not all duds! Self-critique is needed because only the photographer himself/herself will see or have the time to analyse all their photos.

There is a lot that could be said about self-critique and how to hone the skills. I’ll not attempt to add it here in this post, but will join in again later if others take up the subject again. I mainly wanted to add another echo to Ciaran’s very valid point.

    Thanks for that bertie.

What I need to develop is my basic skills. (not the point and shoot kind)
For instance the 1/3 rule I had never heard of that before. The type of comments I recieved from my 2 posts have given me material to work on and to learn that will last me for awhile now. Once I have my head around the basics it should enable me to be more critical of my shots.
So hopefully the next post you see from me the basics “should” be more sound.

Oh and BTW am not really going to give up weddings or anything else for that matter. It is what my wife calls an american sense of humour that nobody (including most americans) get.

    Cheers
    John

    Hi John,

There are some good links and tutorials in the appropriate sections on this site.

Critique yourself harshly, but don’t beat yourself up :)

    Si
