It’s been ages since I’ve put anything up here, took this over the weekend from our kitchen window… I think it’s a male?

    c + c appreciated,

    Cheers,

Hey beef, great to see you posting. Lots to like about this image, colours are great, exposure is pretty spot on, nice depth of field (no distracting highlights in the background) and i really like the composition (with a crop, the bird is on the diagonal from tail to top right hand corner). I do think the image is a wee bit soft and could do with a crop to get rid of the distraction in the bottom left hand corner.
I’ve done a quick edit to show you minor changes.

Super edit, Ali. Good shot to begin with and it looks really good now. Imagine how good it would have been without the kitchen window glass in the way.

It also answered a question for me …. what was the new fella that was hitting our feeders in the afternoon.

Really like Ali’s edit. The crop and the sharpening have really helped to lift this image.

Hi Ali, thanks for putting the effort into this! To be honest, I don’t even know how to selectively sharpen shots like this… All I ever do is use the photoshop sharpen filter but this adds noise to the rest of the image so I tend to just leave it alone. Care to spill the beans as to how you did it please!?

    Cheers,
    Beef.

I can tell you what I do:
    – I create two new layers that are copies of the original, one called D and one called L.
    – I set each of them to 75% opacity.
    – I set L to be “lightened” and D to be “Darkened”.
    – I run Unsharp mask on each of them. I’m fairly careful in the wizard/dialog to monitor the noise levels, halo’s, over sharpening, etc. I only use the first two sliders. The first will be anywhere from 50 to 90 and the second will be anwhere from 0.8 to 1.2.
    – The USM is run on both L and D.
    – I then merge the visible layers.

I run a noise nija plugin in photoshop. This is handy where the noise is noticeable in the background or foreground. I’ll create a new layer and run the NN plugin on it. Usually I run it less than full whack to avoid a total mess. Sometimes I find it reduces detail in my main subject. Not a probelm: I delete the subject from the new layer, thus revealing the subject in the lower layer.

Other stuff includes the usual levels, colour, shadow/highlights and curves. Lately I’ve been oversaturating in RAW to TIFF conversion and then desaturating the TIFF. Don’t ask me .. I just like the results in the end :-)

    Thanks for that joe!

I’ll have a crack on next weekends pics (if I get any that is)…

    Cheers,
