How long do you have to keep digital photos?

    Folks,

I have been a professional for over five years now and I’m wondering how long I need to hold onto digital photos?
Most of my work is weddings, any going back to 2006 have been done and dusted so there is no issue there!

What is the timeframe involved? Are they considered the same as any other business document?

    cheers

Personally I think that you should be trying to keep them forever. Cataloged, archived and backed up.

All down to personal decision and taste.

I keep mine all the way back to when I started, only because disk space is dirt cheap.

Surely there must be some legislation somewhere? I don’t think it should be down to a case of personal taste!

My own thinking on it was – after 5 years, delete all raws, keep jpegs archived!

You own the Rights to your photographs, so unless you have stated or agreed otherwise, then it’s 100% up to you.

However, you can buy a 1TB hard drive these days for around £50, so why not save them – because someday, someone, somewhere, may want one of those pictures e.g. their son or daughter or even their grand children – and that one image may be worth more to them than £50.
