How to start a day without stress…

I woke up at 3am today and couldn’t sleep back, so I thought, I will punish myself :) I went up to Wicklow for a walk and ended up on the Great Sugarloaf at sunrise. I was experimenting mostly with using flash in landscapes, but they all ended up crap… These are the ones where I didn’t use flash. I thought, I would ask for help, hope you have some ideas with regards to white balance, composition, exposure. Any ideas how to get the best out of these pictures?

j_machaleParticipantI love the 1st and the 3rd ones!
I think I rather the 3rd over the 4th as the cow is looking into the distance (I guess :D) instead of at the camera so the silhouette idea works better as your not left searching for detail in the face.
The only thing I might do with the 3rd is a small crop off the top to balance it up a little. The second one is the only one that doesn’t do anything for me – just seems to be a lack of a subject in it.
At least your self-torture paid off :D
John.
Jay KingParticipantI woke at 4am last night – couldn’t sleep cos my body was still going from my training… but there was no way I was getting up for a walk haha! Fair play!
I like the first one… although I feel it needs a slight rotation (anti-clockwise) for some reason…
The 3rd one is great too… but contrary to John, I initially though the cow WAS looking into the camera!?
PeteTheBlokeMemberI’m in awe. You might be able to get lithium treatment from your doc. Have you asked?
The first bullock is my favourite. I like the tones in the sky and his googy stance.
There seems to be a funny little squiggle in your photos. Is it a sig from the full-size version?
randomwayMemberThanks for the comments, folks! When I first looked at the photos, I thought the same as you…. the cows were much more fun than the sunrise itself. Actually, they stopped grassing and came to me and started posing for the camera. They were facing the camera on both shots; it still looks on the third as a cow wondering about the meaning of life and looking in the rising sun…
You should try going up there before work once in a lifetime… it changed my whole week, feels like I came back from holidays now.
j_machaleParticipantDoh! – they’re looking at the camera? I guess thats Jay’s Ninja 6th sense coming through!
PeteTheBlokeMemberSorry…but look…I don’t want to be a bore, like, but when they have that yock under their
body they are not cows. Tsk – you city types….randomwayMemberj_machaleParticipantSsssshhhh – don’t tell Pete but when I first looked at the 3rd photo I was actually thought it was a lamb staring into the distance :D
