Just a couple from a local Under 16 Hurling match between Ardmore and Portlaw in Waterford. My son plays on the Ardmore team and to pass the time I sometimes take some photos, hurling would not be my favourite sport and I can get bored quite easily!

I still have horizon issues! For the record, Portlaw won. C and C welcome, as always. Thanks lads and lassies.

Don’t worry about horizon issues when shooting, but rather crop the horizon straight in PP.

Your DOF isn’t great. Maybe it’s the aperture or maybe the distance between the subject and the background.

The DOF isn’t great, I agree; I have a feeling I may have AF points set wrong, seems to take in more than the central figure. I’m still on a learning cure with the 1D Mk 2 N, it’s the most sophisticated camera I’ve ever had! Was even thinking of going back to a 50D, had one of them last year and looking back on my files recently I realised that it was producing some excellent images compared to some some problematic ones I am producing now. Also, the “crispness” of the 50D ones straight from camera is beating the 1D ones as well; and I was only using a Sigma 70-300 on the 50D compared to the 70-200 L f4 I have now. Still, every day is more knowledge gained and I take in and work on everything that is said.

I’m off to Munster’s Rabo game in Musgrave Park on Saturday and Cork City’s Airtricity game on Sunday so plenty scope to hone my budding “skills” Paul!. The Munster game will have an early kick-off so a lot of it will have good light and the soccer game the next day will be all daylight so looking forward to that. Hate flodlights!

    Cheers

The focus point wouldn’t have anything to do with the depth of fiely Gerry…you say you are using the Canon 70-200 f4…thats one of the sharpest lenses in the Canon range but for sport you have to use AV or aperature priority and set your lens to f4 for the maximum amount of background blur and the highest shutter speed…can you provide details of what settings were used in these photos please and we can work from there…if you are down in Waterford City sometime we can have a chat…I will be covering all the Bord na Nog finals this year and mabye Ardmore will qualify ??

I was on shutter priority at this game, just checked back on the files, so that explains the DOF. I really should get used to just setting the aperture and worrying less about the speed factor as that will set itself as a result. The 70-200 L is super sharp alright, delighted with it. I’d be only too happy to meet up sometime at a game in the county, our Under 14 footballers are going well and have a good shot at a county title so there is a good chance that we can hook up. I think I met you briefly at a county final at underage level last year, in Dunhill, when our 13s won a county title against St. Saviours. It was early May if memory serves me.

I’m off for my daily 10 mile cycle, massive excercise regime this year!

You basically want to set a single focus point, and not have it hunt for focus. Mostly I use centre point only for focus. I tend to focus on upper chest, or where possible, the face.

Shooting Shutter Priority (Tv) is good once light is low enough. Otherwise, in a changing light conditions, shooting Aperture Priority (Av) would be better, and setting the maximum aperture of your lens. The next step then would be to shoot manual, where you can specify both aperture and shutter speed.

Moving from a prosumer body like the 50D to a pro body like a 1D MkIIN is a step. But, the 50D, being much newer, should have better IQ and even focus. But, the 1D series is a lot more reliable and sturdy.
