I Declare Myself A Blank Canvas!

Hello lads and ladies of the forum.

Names Brian, i’m 24, living in south west limerick and for the past while have been thinking about taking up photography as a past time.
I’m not looking to become a prefessional snapper, just to be able to take, and know how to take properly, some nice photos.
My main interests in the photography section would be : People, automobiles and landscapes, especially riverside photos.
If anyone can suggest where i should start of or offer any advice?
To be honest, finances arent great given the big R going on at the moment, so im going to probably have to make do with my current digital camera, about a 10mp cam.
Probably not good enough for proper photographs, but…… surely it will do the job while i get the feel for it?

All suggestions and comments kindly appreciated.
Looking forward to the day I feel confident enough to post a photo to be critiqued :P

hi Brian, iam new at it myself (about a year). 1st step that i think u should take is keep an eye out for any beginner course in your area and find out if there is a club near u to join. You would learn so much by meeting people who have lots of experience. Your camera is fine as its not the camera that takes the shot. also get out there and take photos as there is not a better feeling while wandering the streets or countryside taking shots that appeal to you. Also the amount of interesting people u meet is astounding. Most important thing is enjoy.

dont worry about the camera – also dont worry about posting images in the various forum, its sometimes the best way to learn by getting advise from others.

i only changed to a dSLR a few months ago, had been using a 6mp zoom fujifilm up to that.

as sirvad says its not the camera that takes the pic. i found magazines like digital camera and practical photography good as each month different topics covered, and definitely the guys and girls here on PI are great.

Welcome to the site Brian, I look forward to seeing what you have,
we were all beginners once and no need to feel nervous of putting up
shots for critique, it is a great way of learning and you will get plenty
of advice and help along the way.

I am sure there is a camera club down your way which would be a
good starting point for you, I think there is a section here that lists
    camera clubs.

Welcome onboard, as already said try and get into a camera club, but use this site also for learning. There is an absolute wealth of material to help on the internet look at http://www.photo.net, they have alot of great tutorials and the likes.

Also worth buying or borrowing the book Understanding Expsoure, a great book that will get you upto speed on some of the theory.

Look forward to seeing some of your stuff here, I have been doing it for around 10 months and seeing the difference in my shots over the year, just shows how much there is to learn.

welcome onboard Brian. remember your local library great way to read up and most importantly it costs nothing and most of them would have postings for local clubs.

    Hey Brian,
a lot of what photography’s about is capturing light. If you like rivers, bring your camera for a walk by a river first thing in the morning. As the sun rises (if it rises-this is Ireland after all!) the light changes dramatically. Try taking pictures using the auto function. switch the camera to manual and vary the shutter speed (written as a fraction e.g. 1/60), aperture (written as an f-stop e.g. f4) and iso which is a measure of the film sensitivity. Compare the results and learn.
Read the camera manual and look up the stuff you don’t understand on the web
Then do a course, you’ll get more out of it.

    Best of luck

I’m still trying to upload my 1st picture!!
