I bought a 6 VOLT battery in the local chemist this morning to fit the Bronica ERTSi… cost €9.99.

Back at the PC I just picked up a 2nd elsewhere for €4.50.

Have to say though… the extra €5.49 really made me feel good about myself… grrrr.

    Here’s something else interesting –

Amazon.co.uk advertize prices in GBP with UK VAT rates applied.

However, should you choose to purchase that item they will apply the Irish VAT rate at checkout.

I wasn’t aware of this until last week when me Da brought it to my attention.

I e-mailed them as I wasn’t aware that this was common practice. Response below.

    Dear Mr. Brady,

Thank you for contacting Amazon.co.uk with your enquiry.

From your email, I understand that you would like to know the VAT charges for the orders which dispatch to “Ireland”.

In accordance with the laws governing members of the European Union, Amazon.co.uk is obliged to register and charge for VAT on all orders delivered to destinations in member countries of the EU.

Charging Irish VAT rates is not a new directive and legal, but its an old one.

Please note that our prices listed on our website are inclusive of the British VAT rate applied.

However, for books, it is currently 0%.

For all orders and deliveries that we send to “Ireland”, we are obliged to charge VAT at the your local rate which is 0% for books and 15% for all the other items.

When you purchase an item on our website, the price you see initially is the price that includes the rate of VAT applicable within the United Kingdom.

If your order is marked to be delivered to another member state of the European Union, we will re-calculate the price during the checkout process of your order by taking the price of the item, excluding UK VAT and adding VAT at the rate applicable in the EU member state. Since VAT rates differ widely within the EU, the final price of your order will often change to reflect the VAT rate that is in place in the EU country of destination.

For example, most member states of the European Union charge VAT on books whereas the United Kingdom does not.

If you wish to determine the final price you will be charged for an order, then please view the order summary section of the order form. When VAT applies to an order, the relevant VAT charges for the country of destination will be clearly reflected on your e-mail confirmations and invoices.

We hope that this information answers your enquiry.
