I only want one lens…
-
collyParticipant
Currently I have a Canon 400D, with a Sigma 17-70mm f4.5-5.6 and also the Sigma 70-300APO. I also have the Canon 50mm 1.8.
I almost never use the 70-300 and have very few good shots with it. I usually just stick with the 17-70 but really its not that great and I wish i had more depth of field. I like the 50mm and will keep that. However, I’m thinking of getting rid of the other two and just getting one all-in-one lens so I don;t have to swap them but have one lens that does it all (almost)
I don’t do a lot of landscape so don’t need super wide, but would like it a good bit more than the current 70mm. So, I was thinking about something like the Sigma 28-200 f3.5-5.6.
What do you think? What others could I consider? I really do not want to spend a lot of money (The usualy impossible question I know) but I might try to find something 2nd hand etc.
Would appreciate some advice.
CheersPD_BARBSParticipantThats a tricky one, don’t know very much about this lens, but doubt it would be any better than your 17-70 which has a great reputation, especially if you want more (shallower) DOF.
I was in a similar delemma about six months ago and bought the Tamron 28-75 as my general purpose lens, my brother has just gone through the same issue and sold his 17-70 for the Tamron 28-75, the advantage here is that the cost is pretty much the same, so you pick up a second hand Tamron for near what you get for you 17-70.
Or if you are feeling really flush maybe try the Canon 24-105 or 24-70, both excellent pieces of kit.
I may be worth hanging onto the 70-300, as you say you never use it, so do you not need that focal length that much or just because you don’t like this lens. Or you can then sell you siggie and invest the money in getting a canon 70-200, not as much reach but miles ahead with respect to image quality, non IS version will cost around £400 second hand.
If you are set on the one lens route, the Tamron 17-270 VR may be an option, one for sale on here:
Look at fredminranda.com for peoples views on this and other lenses.
nfl-fanParticipantI’m a bit confused… what exactly do you mean when you say “I wish I had more depth of field”?
Lenses with wide maximum apertures ( F1.2, F1.4, F1.8 ) have a shallow depth of field… is this what you want?

Shutter BugMemberI’d suggest looking at either 1 of three lenses:
Canon 18 – 200 Lens
Sigma 18 – 200 OS Lens
Tamron 18 – 270 VC LensAll three are good all rounders.
