I took my first Holga shots :-)

Got my new Holga 120N in the post yesterday. So during lunch today I loaded a roll of Fuji Pro 400H Colour film and set off outside.

Loading the film was a bit fidgety and I found that slipping the spool out and starting off the roll a few turns before slotting it back into place was an easier way of loading.

Anyway, mistake No.1 was that I mistook the first number (1) as just another line and rolled passed it..therefore losing one shot immediately. I realised then that Fuji 120 film at least gives you a series of black dots that decrease in size just before each shot. Handy to know now.

Then when I took my first shot I thought the shutter felt a little strange when I pressed it down..not definite enough or something…so..came back in..checked and lo and behold I’d set it on Bulb. Lost No.2 shot I’m guessing..or at least massively over exposed.

So I switched it back to N for Normal I guess, selected the little Mountain symbol and went back out and took my shot again. Hopefully third time lucky

I did the little red window mod thing..cut a length of black insulating tape and attached a small piece of card to the back of it to cover the window, to stop the film getting flashed in sunlight (see..I’m learning the film lingo already). I didn’t bother insulating the rest of the body as I’ve read that the new 120N models are far less prone to light leaks in this way.

I left in the 6×6 Mask this time, but I might take it out for the next roll.

So now I just have to take 9 more shots and I’ll be finished my first ever roll of 120 Holga exposed film.

    I’m just a little excited.

John..what’s to learn..just load the film..point and press the shutter and hope for the best…

Sounds like now you know what I was talking about

I was out for a stroll with me camera at lunchtime too… but I realised I had lost my lust for Street photography. I think the sea is calling once again… I just wish the weather would co-operate.

Looking forward to seeing how you got on.

Hehe!! Yeah..kinda…but I guess like everything..practice will make better..if not perfect

Now I’m just waiting for my new Scanner to arrive so I can scan the negs and not spend €€€’s printing unexposed shots.

Gotta say though..is fun…even loading the film is fun..I kinda like the whole tactile thing of ripping open the film packing foil and rolling the lead out…something you don’t get with Digital. Just has more mystique than slotting a CF card into a hole.

But fear not..I wont be trading in my D300 just yet

I’ve never bothered covering the red window at all, never suffered with any light leaks on my holga yet.

The film loading process is a bit different. Did you use the Holga take up spool. if so keep the film in a very dark place until your ready to process it.
The spool is slightly too big and can allow light leaks on the edges of you film.
    :) :)
Good luck with the rest of the roll, and don’t forget to post the results

I did indeed use the Holga spool Thomas…I don’t have any other one  It did seem quite loose and fidgety till I got it moving. Is there an alternative?

Thanks again. Can’t wait to get a roll done now

They’ll probably all be sh1te..but sure isn’t that half the fun :D

when your finished this roll you’ll have a fuji spool from the roll your using now. just use that.

Unfortunatley thats the only alternative now that youv’e loaded it.

Don’t worry though. won’t make much of a difference

Cool Robbie, looking forward to seeing your pictures…

When you switch it to mountains, you have to point it at mountains.
    Similarly for the people setting.

When you reach the end of the roll, wind and wind-
it’ll help to wrap the film up tight-

There’s a message on the film, load and unload in subdued light-
unloading in subdued light is far more important,
especially, as has been mentioned, for your first roll on the Holga spool-
    I didn’t know that-

When you take the roll out of the camera, pull the paper tight before sticking the flap-

Dontcha love the smell of 120?

Well done, Robbie, hope you won’t give up the usual fast action people photography though.

PanF+ is the best smelling film on the market, and maybe the Fuji 160S comes close second… important factor when you choose your medium.

Well..there was a smallish hill in the distance..does this count? Oh and there were some cows grazing in a field..but I searched for ages and couldn’t find a cow symbol!!

    Duly noted..thanks for the tip.

Hmm..never noticed the smell..unusual for me..liked the feel though..I’ll have to make sure and sniff my next roll :D

Sinead..I laughed myself as well…sure ye have to.

Thommac…thanks…I’ll be extra careful removing the film.

Zoltan…might even take the holga out for a little street trip..could be interesting…as long as it’s sunny :D

Mark…whether anyone sees the results probably depends on how good, or more importantly, how bad they are

Everyone who has used film that doesn’t have an actual “1” numeral printed on the paper makes that mistake at least once . Welcome to the club.

It is fun, isn’t it Robbie? :D I was struggling with second roll even more. I’ve chosen very old fomapan F21(about 20 years old) and couldn’t even slot the roll in. It was tiny bit longer, but the major problem was -the holes were too small for holgas fat pins! So I had to open the holes with cordless :) Lucky I was at home…
So holga is simple and light camera, but you need to cary a toolbox or wheeled workshop around with it
