Im not buying anymore cameras for a while . . .

Over in the Digital Photography thread Davedunne posted a thread about
the 50th anniversary of the PEN cameras by Olympus . . .

Martinoc said he was not going to buy any more cameras for a while.

I uinderstand where he is coming from. This hobby/profession IMO is
a highly addictive and costly one.

I myself have gone through a serious amount of gear I thought it would
be interesting if people posted a type of chronology of the gear they have
gone through since they started and what they have now.

Well.. I’m about to leave for my bus shortly… but before I go:

I often wondered what it’d have been like to start my own Formula 1 Team if I hadn’t of been sucked in by photography.

Looking through the Speedgraphic.co.uk catalogue the other night… it’s not even funny the amount of sh*te you can buy that’s photography related… and it’s all serious money.

Well, I’ve only owned two point’n’shoots, two DSLRs and a lomo fisheye.

    Nikon Coolpix 4100
    Nikon Coolpix P2
    Nikon D50
    Nikon D200
    Fisheye

I’ll buy myself a D300 at some stage but probably not for about 18 months.

I’m much more inclined to spend my money on lenses. Which are very expensive.

All my gear is worth about €7,000 in Irish prices, but I haven’t spent quite that as I got most of it abroad/online.

Having said all that those Olympus Pens (the originals) look very interesting, as do these more modern pocket sized almost-dslr quality cameras.

    Well I have owned . . .

    2 x Canon AE-1’s,
    1 x Canon AV-1,
    1 x Eos 1000F,
    1 X Nikon F,
    1 X Canon T90 and various Lenses.
Im on my 4th Tripod and I have 6 cameras now.

And there is so much more stuff I want . . .

    Do I need it?

PhotographyIreland.net could have easily been Forumla1Ireland.net

    with characters like F1-FAN, irishshumacherfan, Pirelli451, pitstop321 and so on . . .

I don’t have cameras or lenses that I bought and found useless. Only my Smena 8 is collecting dust, but I only bought it out of nostalgy. Photo equipment tend to keep their value fairly well if you buy second hand and always the good stuff.

Digital toys like that Olympus loose value quick, and I keep myself away of them.

For years I used a point and shoot, a Olympus Mju 2 didn’t really care too much about features but I thought it had a nice lens.

With the coming of digital I decided to get a dSLR so I could see what all the fuss was about.

    Canon 350D
a few months after followed by a Canon 28-135 lens
after a year my camera packed in so I got a Canon 400D
    I got a Sigma 30mm f/1.4, a Canon 35mm f/2, Canon 50mm f/1.8
    then a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8
    then a Canon 135mm f/2 L
    then a Canon 24mm f/1.4 L
Every lens for the canon system has a hoya polariser.
    Panasonic LX1
    then a Lomo (Toy)
then a Voitlaender Bessa r3a rangefinder
    Nokton 40mm f/1.4
    Konica Hexanon 50mm f/2
    Voitlaender Bessa r4a rangefinder
    Nokton 35mm f/1.2
    Cosina Voitlaender 21mm f/4
    Konica Hexanon 50mm f/1.2
    Hasselblad 501c with 80mm and 180mm lens
Olympus XA, baby rangefinder always in pocket
Vivitar Ultra Wide & Slim clone (Toy)

I wish to sell most of my canon lenses except the last 3 I bought, and the 180mm lens for the Hasselblad, and have a friend interested in buying the r3a with 40mm.

I use my rangefinders mostly (one with fast film and the other with slow), occasionally bring the Hasselblad out for the day, and there are occasions where I use the digital (eg butterflies, as the film cameras have manual focus).

I don’t see it as a waste, I needed to try out different forms to see what would appeal to me. Expensive trials for sure but I’m now in reduction mode. I hope.

My film days aside where I went throuch many changes with many lenses
[couldnt even list them, have forgotten the particulars about them]
    my digital escapades are . . .

    350D body only
I was using an old Sigma 28-70 which I got re-chipped for digital
    I tried a 28-135 and sold it
    Then got an Sigma 18-200
    Battery grip followed
    Upgraded to the 5D
    17-40 F4 followed by a
    70-200 F4 L
    430 Ex speedlite
    then a 28-70 F2.8L
Sold the above and bought a Sigma 15-30
    Nikon 50mm F1.4 prime
Nikon 35mm F2.8 prime as a stop gap until the following arrived
    Zeiss 24-85 F3.5-4.5
    Zork PSA
    Pentax 645 33-55 FA F4.5
Sold the Nikon 50 and Sigma 15-30
got an Olympus 100 F2.8 prime
    Olympus 135mm F3.5
And my latest addition glass wise is an Olympus 200mm F4
    Holga 120
    Lubitel 166B

Balda Baldixette from the mide 50’s [which i am fearing is lost in the post]
and at the weekend I bought an O.P.L Foca sport from the late 50’s

Would really fancy changing me gear to the new Pentax 645D when it arrives
but yea that might be a bit of a pipedream.

    a screw-mount pentax with again 28, 50 and 200mm
my old pentax that fell in the ocean and it’s a its now an expensive paperweight.
    a kodak retinette
    holga 120N
    eximus ultra wide
    two 35mm compact from yashica
    a ducati half frame
    canon eos 1vhs, 5d and 30d

but I can quit whenever I want.
