In this thread I was quoted, correctly, saying “Im not buying anymore cameras for a while”

Well how long is a while? about as long as a piece of string, when you think about it.The problem was that for various reasons I haven’t been using my big MF camera but I have lots of 120 film, weather is hot humid and no room in the fridge.
My was considering getting a Holga to shoot the film, light and easy to carry.Serendipitously, I saw a Lubitel 166 in a used camera shop when I was out last weekend. I remembered that’s what Aoluain has, with great results.
It was cheap too, so that’s that for another while.
It is a very light and small camera, fits in my side bag. Its got full focussing but I think zone focussing is the best achievable. I hope to use it for candid shots, guessing zone focusing, as the shutter is very quiet. All in all, I’m very happy with it.
Martin
3 Shots from my first day out with it, in Yokohama. Fujifilm Pro400.
#1 Typical lo-fi shot I think.
#2 This shot is ideologically impure: Photoshopped to get rid of red light leak (from leaving the frame number window open), rotated and cropped a bit, and even cloned out a piece of paper I didn’t like.
I’m not sure the shot worked as I wished, I should have gotten closer, the woman was quirky.
#3 This shot has a lot of detail, I did stop down as much as I could, but I think hi-fi would have been better here.
thefizzParticipantThe 166 is a cool little camera but the focusing it probably the worst aspect ot it. But once you get used to it you’ll really enjoy it.
MartinParticipantCongrats on the new purchase. The pics look great. I don’t have one of these but they do look like a very capable camera.
Not sure I would call them lofi though as they have adjustable shutter speeds and apertures, lens is quite sharp in them also. Everyone has their own definition for lofi though so don’t mind me….M
aoluainParticipantNIce set Martin,
Love #3 those angles and lines are very interesting and the figure adds
a twist to it too.The first thing that struck me about #2 was the scale! it looked so quirky
with the man and woman in the foreground larger tha the buildings . . .
just for a sec it threw me . . . weird.they all seem to be nice and sharp and exposed good too.
Yep the 166 is a cool little jobbie all right.
My one has had a bit of an accident . . .
I had it in the car with me for a umber of weeks and the vibrations
have loosened some of the tiny screws, well actually all of the screws
holding on the hot shoe and one of the screws holdong on the metal
latch for the door is missing, hot shoe im not worried about as I dont
use flash and the camera is a funny thing now there are elastic bands
wraped around it :roll:Anyway good to see these, fair play on the purchase . . . they really are
so cheap and there seems to be plenty out there!Alan
jb7ParticipantThat third one should be in the architecture section-
that’s a pretty famous building and that’s as good an interpretation of it as any-So what’s the story with this camera?
The lens looks pretty well corrected,
it doesn’t look as if it’s a single element-
Any idea?As Alan said, everyone has their own idea of lo-fi,
I wonder what actually defines it…joseph
aoluainParticipantAs far as I know the Lubitel has a ‘triplet’ lens.
I think looking at the results from this box you would think it isnt Lo-Fi
but when you get your hands on the machinery you KNOW its Lo-Fi :lol:There are some very annoying and basic things with camera, the door
is a bit flimsly secured, kind of say 3 decades of the rosary job and
the focusing is a bit . . . tedious?RobMemberMartinOCParticipantThanks all for the replies/comments.
I don’t fully understand the term Lo-Fi myself. If it’s merely low fidelity then it could mean Michael Kenna or any woolly water, or hdr applied in creative ways, or any amount of things which generally its not considered to be. I just thought I’d stick the post in here.
In this case I thought that as the esteemed ‘lomographic society’ have brought it into their fold and produced their own copy, that it would qualify.
About their version (from their website) “The overall feeling of shooting a Lubitel+ is thoughtful, intimate, and quite romantic. Not to mention humorous, straightforward, intense, atmospheric, centered, focused, strange, light, silent, surprising, passionate, and amateurish in the best sense of the word!”I hope my version has some of that going on!
JB: It’s a Bakelite camera with dodgy construction. It does have aperture and speed settings; but the lomo lc-a, a lo-fi standard, has a light meter.
As Alan said, and afaik, it has a triplet lens, glass.
I’m surprised that you recognise the building, it is very cool and very refined. When I saw it I did wonder if it was well known.Aoluain: I think you are happiest when you have elastic bands holding you camera together
Rob: “lo-fi my arse..” Are you offering to be a model for the next Lo-Fi day? :D

Tee hee… that most definitely did sound like an offer to model, now, wouldn’t that be something of a spectacle
on that big table in the ISE…These are great Martin, really, really love that third picture. Superb!!
Is it small? Am I tempted? Yes… No.
I’m not buying anymore cameras for a while…
