Imac needed – long shot i know!
-
annkenParticipant
hello,
long shot i do know in asking if anyone has a GOOD imac for sale. I need a 27″ monitor as oopsie, i am going a tad bit blind.
yes, diagnosed with macular degeneration and cataracts so REALLY need this darn thing!
i have images to see, process and produce!
all the best,
annken :xjaybeeParticipantdon’t go for a new iMac then…. glossy screen will not be friendly to your eyes unless you can completely control the ambient light… I have two… one 20″ matte one 24″ glossy, 20″ although ancient is a much nicer screen to work on…. try a second hand macpro + screen….
annkenParticipantthanks for this info and its good info too, i shall indeed.
please, for the ignorant what is the difference between Imac and macpro + screen?
are you thinking of a macbook pro? i have one of these laptops, it is newish, only last year really. can you get a separate moniter to link with the keyboard of this gizmo do you think?
xannjahernParticipantIf you have a Macbook pro, and find it fast enough for processing, then get an external monitor, you could pick up up something like a Dell or Nec 27″.
As mentioned already the latest iMac and Apple screens are glossy, so the reflections off them can be a problem if your room is not set up well with curtains, lights etc. If you go to a local shop that sells Apple stuff you can see for yourself.
I currently have a a White iMac 24″, and I’m going to be selling that shortly and move to using an external monitor with the Macbook pro I have.
The one thing I noticed over the last few years is I’ve changed computers and camera bodies a lot, and probably wasted money in process. However good lenses, my Gitzo carbon fiber tripod, Lee fitler kit and Wacom tablet always remain, so I’m going to spend the money on a really good monitor, and just change the camera bodies/Macbook when I really need to, as oppose to when I want to.
annkenParticipantgreat info here i have to say.
yes my macbook pro is brand new within the last 18mths. i think i would cope with an Apple screen, cos i would make the room suit me, but then again it might not suit my pocket and a Dell or Nec27′ might do the trick. i will do some costings and testings!!
i have to stick with the camera i have for the moment and the macbook, my lenses are not great but i have a wacom i need to re-learn. there has been mega changes in my life over past few years in so many ways you wouldnt believe. i long to get back to what i call ‘normality’ taking pics, writing, and doing more creative stuff with the photograpy and such. all the best, annjahernParticipantHave a look at the following post, it describes somebody’s set up using a MacBook Pro and Apple Display
http://neilvn.com/tangents/2010/02/01/mac-centricity/#more-2149
If you don’t find the glare a problem from the new Cinema display then you have the advantage of a tidy set up as you will only have one cable running between the MacBook and Cinema display.
By the way, a 27″ Cinema display is €1,099 from the Apple Store, the cheapest 27″ iMac is €1,649. The Dell is €967 (but you have to pay extra fro the speaker bar that attaches below the screen), also with the Dell, you have to type Dell 27″ in the serach field for this display to come up, you can’t find it by going through the normal product menus.
If can drop your monitor size down to 24″ then the prices take quite a step down.
You can also have a look in the refurbished section of Apple’s website http://store.apple.com/ie/browse/home/specialdeals/mac?mco=OTY2ODY2NQ they sometimes have refurbished 27″ iMac and Cinema screens.
annkenParticipantreally appreciated this advice and have gone through the apple website and the
discription of the set up with the laptop!
i have the stand alone keyboard and never liked my mouse anyway!
the cinema screen will be ok i think, the glare is not too bad.
wanted to go into the shop yesterday and the day before, no darn parking slot!!
talk soon…annkenParticipantrang the macshop in merrion and they have a cinema screen 27′ for E1,100 and i will not try see how i can muster that up.
it was great advice here i have to say and am now actively persueing this.
xxannannkenParticipantsame on Amazon is £819.97 equals E919 so a bit of maths seems to be that Amazon would save you some i think.
xanndan.browneParticipantHey annken
Did you get sorted with this. I may be putting my 27″ iMac up for sale in the next few days. Just doing some research into my next possible upgrade. If you are still looking into the iMac as an option then give me a shout.
Just send us a PM and I will get back to you ASAP.
Daniel
