MarkMarkKeymasterRight, I’m booked onto it. Anyone else?
For anyone into their street photography, it seems like its something not to miss, ie the talk or the workshop :)
In addition, its great to see something of this nature come to Cork.fguihenParticipantI called about this and there has been a very slow uptake. It now looks like there are enough to make it worthwhile, but aparently there is not a lot of uptake on the friday night talk.
Once i get confirmation its going ahead i will book, assuming i can get a reasonably priced hotel at that stage. Friday night talk would be nice but I live in Dublin and theres no way i can be in Cork for 7:30 as i only leave work at 6.
MarkKeymasterMarkKeymasterHi Fintan,
I just got word that the workshop is going ahead. Happy days :)
seanyMemberInterested to hear how you enjoyed the evening and two day workshop Mark.
MarkKeymasterHey there,
I had a very good time over the 3 days. The talk on the Friday night was for 2hrs where there was a general intro to street photography, proceeded with a talk through his own black & white and colour street photographs. The crowd there got really involved asking questions and discussing the photos, ethics etc… It was worth attending the talk for sure.
David Gibson was excellent throughout the whole weekend, quietly spoken chap, witty, very knowledgeable, open to questions and discussion. Really listened to peoples viewpoints and offered up his own in a considered manner. Over the weekend, we went through the work of the ‘masters’, many of in-public’s photographers and selected others whom he enjoyed or had influenced him, exploring what street photography was and its many flavours or interpretations. At no point during the workshop did you feel put on the spot or uncomfortable.
There were a assignments both days which were interesting and challenging to do. While out taking photos you could do your own thing or stay with David. I did my own thing on the Saturday and walked around with him and some others on the Sunday. He spent time talking to people individually while out which was appreciated. Also he pointed out photo opportunities as we walked about which was great. For me it was really interesting to watch a photographer of his standing go about his work.
On the Sunday afternoon we spend almost 4 hours going through our previous work (which we were encouraged to bring), where David would provide honest critique (very welcome too it was) and then go through the 2 assignments we’d done previously. He also tried to help us work out what our style was etc…
Neither day finished up on time (Sunday finished at 7pm instead of 5/6pm), i.e. they ran over quite a bit which he was more than happy to do.
All in all, it was a great weekend. I’ve come away with a more knowledge appreciation regarding street photography and a very welcome increase in motivation :) Also, it was good to hang out with other photographers who are interested in street while having a good laugh.
Well done to Platform3 for bringing this workshop to Cork. I’d have no problem recommending them. I’d urge photographers in Cork to support their efforts so they’ll continue to bring people as excellent as David Gibson to Ireland. Also if anyone gets a chance to get onto one of David’s workshop to take the opportunity.
Btw, there were quite a few from Cork there for the Sat/Sun together with folk from Dublin, Kerry and Wexford (12 in total on the workshop).
fguihen was at the workshop also. Tiny and Carrigman were at the talk. I only realised it was them after doh :)Mark
