Now that’s what I call a gig shot. For me it’s got to be all about performance and this epitomises that aspect of a gig. Great timing
to catch that expression of pure enjoyment in what one is doing. The dof is just enough to throw the headstock of the bass out of
focus and even the noise and graininess suits the shot. Might have improved it slightly to bring the musicians right hand into the
picture but other than that I love it. Incidentally, not often you see anyone playing barred chords on a bass.
Took a few goes to find a processing style that I thought suited the shot, as (you noted) it was a bit noisy and taken in poor lighting (nothing new there, then!). I played with diffrent crops and considered different proportions, as the black advertising board in the background comes short on the lhs of the image ‘inconveniently’, plus there’s loads of streamers & stuff there to clean up too. Basically more cloning required, without making it look ‘over cloned’.
I thought this crop suited best, but might have another go, as I have a small series of 4 of this type of shot (same everything, different timing/expression) – two are 1:1 and two are 1:618. See how hey look if they’re all 1:1, though at the mo I think some of the impact might be lost.
The artist is one Niwel Tsumbu, a very talented and versatile (and photogenic!) jazz guitarist, though jazz is just one string to his, err, guitar.
