I’ve no idea what others might think here Jay, but I absolutely love this image. Well titled, well shot and composed. The crop close to the feet is absolutely spot on. The light on the forearm and head is superb. The only minor flaw for me is that I think your main subject could be just a tad sharper and your secondary subject a tad more blurred to give the image more DOF. A touch of lensblur in Potato shop would remedy this in jig time. Cracking image.

Cracking image and I’m with Rob on his points. The main subject is a little soft, which is a pity. But apart from that it’s really really GREAT. The composition is spot on and the lighting from above works superbly well. Great shot.

I have to say i really like this as well the angle of view is perfect and i love the bold colours and agree if the secondary figure
was more blured it would put more emphasis on the main subject.

Thanks for the great feedback guys… especially the points that will help me improve (best way for me to learn…)

Just a little about the pic… There was no cropping involved, the image is as it was shot. So I guess I was lucky, especially that I didn’t miss part of the feet! I did clean up the wall a bit though… there were bits of selotape and a power socket there! Think you’re all right about the secondary subject… could do with being a bit more out of focus. I’ll know for next time :) I took this as they were performing a series of moves, and there was a tiny bit of movement as I shot which is why I think the subject is slightly soft???

The light in the room is really hard to work with… pinkish, flickering, fluorescent lights that bounce off the shiny wooden floor and refelective walls… makes it a nightmare especially as there are no windows to let any light in. It took a good few shots and adjustments but I think Ive managed to control it now! Especially as this is where I take most of my photos of training… grief!

Glad you like the title Rob… I had to take some photos of that girl for a magazine, they are doing an article on her and her training in martial arts, as she has a prosthetic (right) leg – which is why I titled it so.

No cropping involved? Then you need to be damn proud of this. Now I’m even more impressed, and incredibly jealous of your ability :x

Haha, cheers Rob! But as I said I think I was just fortunate to get it right first time… especially not to cut out the feet! I’ve seen you’re work and it’s me who has all the reason to be jealous of ability!

    Just beginners luck ;)

    Hey Jay
Yeah def with Rob on the above,i went along to a kickboxing tournament in Kilkenny over the weekend and brought a 50mm 1.8 with me and man the light is hard enough to balance but when fast motion is brought into the equation its very testing.Only thing was that i couldnt get close enough to the ring to get the shots i wanted because its a prime lens but a 80-400 1.8 with stabiliser would do the trick! love the shot by the way.. :D

I haven’t heard of a lens combination like this before… but even if it did exist, I’d HATE to imagine how much it would cost

    Like the shot Jay,

I cover some TKD events out in Donabate (mentioned before I think) and am all too aware of how fast they move etc. even when doing patterns. This is a great capture. The low position of the camera really adds to it. Like the title as well (my son had severe problems with this tenet – just couldn’t get his tongue around it !!)

The local club will be organising a senior fight night soon (some stage before christmas), if you’re interested, drop me a line, I have relative free reign around the rings, but they are not too keen on flash, nevertheless it could be a good night with plenty of good photographic opportunities.

Thanks for the comments Kevin… glad you like it :)

And thanks for the offer too… What club/organisation is it that you are covering? Is it an AIMAA (Action International Martial Arts Association) competition do you know? I’ll be fighting in a senior comp this side of Christmas too, that is being organised… so could be the same one!?!
