Industrial Project

Having grown tired (for the moment at least) of shooting streams and woods, I’ve decided to try a different type of photography – get me out of my comfort zone a bit… :) I’m gonna try and shoot some industrial scenes for the next while and see how I get on. Here’s 2 from today – comments welcome…

Second one is far too saturated for me.
I like the effect in the first going down the picture until I hit the bright blue sky. Does nothing for me in the picture. Just makes it too nice (if you know what I mean)

Maybe try a bw conversion as there seems to be good contrast in the picture.
Great idea for a project though.

Thanks for looking Brian, the saturation was upped by 18% from raw in the second – however there was a curves adjustment also… I may tone it down alright a bit but I’ll see how it prints first. I quite like the blue sky in the first myself… Thanks for taking the time!

Yeah, tend to agree with Brian.. the colours are too harsh in both, the first is bordering on landscape with the green grass and blue sky. B+W might be the route to take especially with these older rusty type constructs.

    That’s a good departure-
    certainly worthwhile-

I think the first is the better of the two-
compositionally as well as the presentation-

Now that you’ve started looking at these things,
maybe it’ll be hard to go back…

Thanks nfl, I printed the first and I’m happy with the saturation I think. I’ll print a couple of versions of the second and see which I prefer. I actually tried black and white first – but the life was sucked out of them I felt. I thought this may qualify as an urban landscape but if Mark wants to move it??

Thanks again for the comments. Helpful as ever!

Sorry Joseph, just saw your comment now. Yes it’s certainly a different type of shot for me and a refreshing change – but it also provides me with a good challenge I think. I agree with you, I think the first is a better shot alright.

I think these are really great photographs; I was obsessed with rusted out industrials parks and the like for about 6 months last year, made a whole project of it. I agree that maybe they’re a bit too saturated, but the B&W or color both would work; probably just a matter of preference.

I’d love to see more of these; hope you keep up the project. :D

I thiink I go along with the earlier comments. The second was way to harsh as soon as I saw it. Second, top half looks good but the grass is too intense. I think I might have been tempted to take the saturation the opposite way, i.e. drain it without going b/w.

1st shot is a good one in terms of composition. Not so mad about the second. I think the road messes it up for me. Plus the colour is sooo intense.

Well done, btw, for challenging yourself. Getting out of the comfort zone can be fun.

Good stuff beef. It’s amazing what you can see as a picture when
you really take a look around. Nice to see you taking a few new steps…

    Thanks Aidan, Rob…

I have to say I’m really enjoying the change. Here’s another from this morning…

Looks like it was too bright for me. The rust is loosing its … charm (?). I would wonder if something like this might be better just before or after rain.

Not yet Johnny, thanks for asking! I’ll stick some up when I get a chance…
