Infra Red not working on 50D + Cokin P.007 filter

    Hi folks,
I’ve been impressed with IR photography and wanted to try my hand at it. I have a canon 50D with a canon 17-35 2.8L lens fitted with a Cokin P.007 filter which I was told by the sales assistant would work fine with my camera. I expose for 20-30 seconds but when I process in camera raw I can recover most of the original colours of the scene – not sure this should be the case. I am looking for white foliage etc but it all seems pretty normal once I dig in behind the initial red. My question is am I using the wrong gear? Or am I missing the processing steps required? Example below of processed “IR” filter image. Any help appreciated…

The light leak is a major problem of Cokin P.007. Bring it back to the shop and get R72.

Thanks I’ll look into that so.

I agree about the Cokin filter letting in light. R72 screw in would be better but you may have to expose with the filter off. The IR effect needs sunlight preferably direct. Your image looks like it might have been a dull day where the effect may not have been enhanced.

Thanks for the reply. I went to another shop for more advice and the guy there told me canon DSLRs are no good for IR photography as they are designed not to allow it in. He said my best bet is a really old Nikon or else buy an old one and get it doctored. I tried my old canon 300D and even that wouldn’t work. I tried it again on a sunny day and even covered the top of the lens with a dark towel – but same story. If anyone using a reasonably new canon has succeeded please let me know but I think I’m on a wild goose chase.

I will try to find a table with IR sensitivities of cameras, that I used to have bookmarked. But You might need to try very long exposures, since their anti IR filters are often stong(depending on the camera)

I have an old 300D but its not even giving any IR type result. I am too sentimental to have it doctored for IR only photography so I will keep an eye out on the internet, maybe I will get an opportunity to order a cheap second hand IR enabled SLR.
