iPhoto Question

Good reply, sm, thank you very much for the detailed reply (thanks everyone else too) it does all make sense. I know I need to sort my folder system out better than what it is at the moment.
The tags function is great, but so far, I’ve only used them at the initial import, I haven’t ever used them when exporting.Ok, so, a LR question. When I import pictures ti LR, are they also copied to the hard drive? Two copies?
Taking up twice as much space? Then, when adjustments are made in LR and the file exported to PS, it makes another
copy… So, this that taking up 3 times as much space?Sorry if that is a stupid question. I have airhead tendencies
I looked through my hard drive for stuff recently, I seem to have lots of duplicate copies of pictures, something like 12’000 raw files, that must be taking up a lot of space?
How does one begin the task of tidying a mess like this up? I almost rather spend an afternoon oven cleaning!!

Make sure that you select “Import photos at their current location” otherwise it will create a duplicate. This is why I use Apple’s Image Capture to transfer the images from my camera to a nice new folder on my hard drive, and then use Import in LR to import that new folder but keeping it at its current location rather than creating duplicates. Actually I believe iPhoto does the same thing by default, it wants to copy all the images inside an iPhoto Library within the application, but similar to LR you don’t have to do this.
As for taking up more space, well if you make sure that photos are imported from their current location, then you wont get any duplication. Now when you make adjustments in LR it will will keep a copy of these adjustments within the LR application (this is why LR asks you every once in a while if you want to back up the adjustments files) so you still aren’t duplicating image files. The only time you would get a duplicate image is when you Export, but at that stage you will be exporting a final edited image to a separate folder. Realistically out of the hundreds of photos imported I only ever export a handful of “keepers”, the rest I’m happy to just let live in LR because there is no real need to export every file. And the great thing is you are safe in the knowledge that those image files in your nice folder structure are as they were when you copied them from your memory card, LR is completely non-destructive so your original is always there to revert to.
I must say though, cleaning an oven out probably is the more attractive of the two tasks :D
PS: Just noticed you can see my sadly attentive filing structure on the left hand side of that screen dump. Erm just ignore the eBay and Passport folders, they slipped out of my system!
PPS: Just re-read your post and saw the bit about PS. If you right click on a thumbnail within LR you can choose “Edit in Photoshop” and then will have the option whether to edit the original, edit a copy or edit a copy with LR adjustments. Most likely you will choose to edit a copy with LR adjustments, and this creates a duplicate. However if you save that duplicate in PS once your finished editing then you have your final edit, no need to Export from LR. I believe its always good practice to work on a duplicate in PS anyway, and if you don’t like it or don’t need it you can always delete the duplicate when your finished. In my situation I can do nearly all the editing I want in LR, so its only very rarely that I have a file that I want to take into PS so I can work with layers etc.
Hope that makes sense, it’s an awful lot easier in practice than it is to explain. Once you get a good system setup it really does become second nature, and for me LR really becomes a one-stop shop for most of my photos.
MartinOCParticipantI do something very similar to Martin (just like I often use the same first name).
Having YYYYMDD as the first part of the folder name means that sorting the names alphabetically orders by date also.Into these folders go the raw/scanned files which are untouched. In each directory I create a folder called “processed” where I put my edits.
I use Bridge to navigate too, and reasonably parsimonious tagging. You might not remember how you tagged something so you may have to search through the tags.
I avoid using any program’s functionality which would lock me into it, better to stay as general as possible.Martin
jessthespringerParticipantThanks again Jon, and Martin… It’s all making a bit more sense to me now. I do frequently forget how I tag things, and all my 3451 pictures in LR are in one folder!
So, from today I promise to be more organised and create a zen like filing system for my folders :DHowever, still no closer to having my iPhoto problem sorted. I rang apple support last night, explained the issue and the response I got was…
“oh my, how very strange… I’m not sure why that would be, mind if I put you on hold?”
50 mins later I was still on hold, I had to hang up. Spoke to them again this morning and had a similar reply, only this time they say they would call me back.
Just messing around, I think I have discovered it is a LR issue, almost all of my processing is done in LR, and finished in PS, where the file is saved as .jpeg
except for print scans, I never do anything with them in LR, just tidy them up in PS and save as .jpeg, no problem exporting them to iPhotoStrange cookies…
So, a LightRoom issue then?
Many thanks again to all for advice and suggestions and enlightening folder organisation help.
