Here are a few shots from the Irish Downhill Mountain Biking NPS. The weather was rough all last week and didn’t show much let up on Saturday. But the sun came out for race day Sunday and it was a fantastic day. The track was brutally rough and tested the riders and their bikes.

    1.

    2. Davey Graham on his way to a convincing win in Juniors

    3. Luke Ireland of Real Cycles in full race tuck

    4.

    5

    6. Andrew Gillis of ChainReactionCycles throwin down some style on the road gap

    7. Richie Smith sends it so far sideways over the road gap. He didn’t pull it back again and had a nasty rag doll down the track.

    8. Turkey making a comeback to form with a 2nd place in Elite

C&C welcome. Particularly to hear how non riders respond to these images. I know 8 is a lot to critique. Pick one!!

    Hi Pete,

    Well done with these.

    #6 is my favourite.

    Cheers,

    John.

    The second for me-
    but they’re all interesting-

It’s possible that some could be a bit darker, perhaps-
it might help bring out some more colour too-

I think I’d prefer not to see the flash too…

    Great set-

Great set Pete, 2,3 and 4 really stand out. I’d have been out there myself, but I was busy snappin away at the Blues in Warrenpoint.

    Were you riding as well?

Number 2,3 and 6 are my favorites of the set, but think number 2 would be better if the flash wasn’t in the shot.

    Thanks for the feedback folks.

I agree about the flash being out of the shot. Ideally I would have hidden it behind a tree, but I am limited to line of sight with Canon’s infra red flash system until I drop the cash on some pocket wizards.

JB- I desaturated these a little, perhaps not enough to look intentional. You know that gritty contrasty desaturated aesthetic that seems to be popular, especially for advertising. I was shooting mostly for myself, but also for a couple of race reports so lifelike, ‘safe’ and documentary was the main order of the day.

I wasn’t riding this time. I’ve only been doing cross country riding this season, and not much of it! I love to take the photos for the riders. Good media coverage always helps to raise the profile of the sport so I don’t mind passing up on a bit of racing. Plus, racing is much harder work!!
