Irish Photo Artist – Art Thief

Mr.HParticipant
Thanks Pete … I’d say Tin eye needs a bit more work then. Looks like a blindingly fast search, but not over useful if it returns nowt (maybe if would find a bit more if it slowed down a bit).
rc53MemberAndy,
You have local journalistic contacts, and also to Amatuer Photographer.
What about a write up about this — picture theft, how to discover what’s been going on, PI solidarity etc?
PD_BARBSParticipantGod I have missed all the fun, its a good idea I could have saved my self a fortune on camera equipment producing crap images and stole people’s good images. Who wants to buy a 400D :)
Where did he nick it from
andy mcinroyParticipantA bit of scandal always makes an interesting story. However, I don’t think this warrants a national expose in Amateur Photographer magazine. He has admitted his wrongdoing and has sunk without a trace. Had Martin kept the image up and tried to claim ownership, things would have got very nasty for him very quickly. Thankfully, all has ended quietly.
I also feel a bit sorry for Martin Cullen. There is definitely something lacking in someones life when they feel the need to receive compliments from strangers about art that is not their own. To me, Flickr seems to me to be a very strange and shallow place, populated by robots, thieves and compliment seekers. Perhaps a better place for people needing a feelgood boost than for proper photographers.
KW, the EXIF was stripped and he’s adjusted the contrast so I have no idea where he got it from. This image has appeared in many forums and of course it is on my webpage.
BMParticipantI was just thinking last night that PI was a bit quiet and probably needed Cathal to start one of his rows.
JMcLParticipantWow, just coming across this now. Well spotted, and what a steaming pile of s**te. Dunno if I feel the least bit sorry for him, he seems to have a fairly high opinion of himself if that biography on Profotos is anything to go by. Seeing as he’s a law graduate, I guess he overslept after a heavy Photoshop session the day they covered copyright law.

nfl-fanParticipantYou mean Cathal is now PI’s Premier sh-t stirrer? Wait till he gets a few locked threads and moderations under his belt.
I’ve lost my touch around here… but tomorrow is Friday. Where’s that 451 fella now…
Gary McParlandParticipantI managed to find one of my images using the Tin-eye software

Gary
PD_BARBSParticipantyou can see why, that is an absolute cracking shot. Watch my avater from here on.
rc53MemberrichiehatchMemberWell done in spotting this Andy… Had the same thing happen to me over on Google Maps Panaramio or whatever ye call it. Heaven knows how many muppets are stealing our images and claiming to have taken them. Pathetic….!!!

‘Tin-eye’ software? Yeh right, just don’t want to admit you’re a registered user of the site and a frequent user of the mushroom soup. Don’t listen folks, the early morning shots are only a cover for Gary’s dawn runs to his favourite foraging sites with his wicker basket and paper bags. Do you have a stall at the local farmer’s market?
‘ Can I have a bag of ceps, a few boletus, a couple of morels and some fresh shiitake please. Oh, is that some magic mushrooms there? I’ll have a bag of them please, we’re having a few guests around for dinner and they’re a bit tight. This should loosen them up a bit before I show them my latest slide show of cacti and orchids’.Only joking, I’d sit through a slide show of your pics anytime, impressed with your site!

jqmx0ParticipantI had some free time last night so I tried out the free invisible watermarking application called Concealar http://concealar.googlepages.com/
I started with a photo and created a version of it using the application which had a copyright message embedded in it.
The resulting photo looked identical to the original, I suspect there may have been additional noise but as the point of this exercise is to protect an image which is going up on the web I didn’t check too carefully.
I verified that I could retrieve the message.
I then opened the photo and cropped it a little bit and saved it under a new filename, I then attempted to retrieve the message but the program could not find it.
I also did a screen capture and saved the photo that way, again the message could not be found.
It looks like this invisible watermark is only useful as long as the thief doesn’t get the image from a screen capture or crops it :(
Maybe the more expensive Digimarc solution gets around these problems, I’ve sent them a query to ask, I’ll let you know what their answer is.
