Irish travellers… where???

Ok, I agree that this could be a strange question but, I look for info on the web and I didn’t find anything so, I ask you, Irish people :)

Do you know where can I find the Irish travellers? Do you think they will be an easily-shooting subject? I saw a photographic reportage (from an Italian photographer, if I remember well) about them; it was just great and I’d like to take some pictures (of course without the claim to be as good as him!).
I’m interested in social groups/subcultures for a long time, since University time (it also happen that I’m a sociologist, but it isn’t so important  ) and one of my secret dreams is to “merge” this interest with the passion for photography…

Well, sorry if I wrote so much (and so bothering stuff..) but I really like to know your toughts about this.

    Cheers

HI Alessia, I’d be accused of being non-PC if I suggested that vacant ground around our bigger towns and cities are good places to look,

    OR

you could contact the Irish Traveller Movement at http://www.itmtrav.com and explain your query.

what do you mean when you say “non-PC “?? Does it mean a non PC (for Personal Computer) person??? Sorry if I ask, but my slang it’s not so good (as my english, on the other hand)

There’s quite a few travellers in the Enniscorthy area, most of them settled now.

The vast majority of them are friendly, easy going people and I’m sure they’d have no problem with someone taking a few photos.

At the top of Shannon Hill on the road to Vinegar Hill to be specific.

Took a series of photos of 3 Travellers washing their horse last year, at their request I might add. Nice chaps and more than happy to have their photo taken.

    That’s exactly what I mean….
Great pictures, i love them, very emotionally-powerful!

Now that I see the horses, I remember that someone suggest me to go to the Horse market in DUblin 7, the one due every first Sunday of the month… do you think it’s a good place as well??
Cheers and thanks again for sharing these beautiful pics!

I’d imagine the Horse Market would be very good. I’d love to have a snoop around there myself… although I did hear that it can be a bit overloaded with photographers… but don’t quote me on that as I’ve never been.

well well…. my intentions seem to be not so “original” then :)
The first Sunday of September I can not go because I’ve got my mum visiting me (and she could die if I brought her in a place like that!) but in October I’ll surely go :)
maybe we can organize a PI meeting there! ;)

    cheers

Hi Alessia. I would recommend that you contact http://www.paveepoint.ie as they can definitely point (excuse the pun) you in the right direction. Most travellers I know are very friendly once they understand what it is that you want to photograph and why. They can be suspicious as to why you want to photograph them and by having a representative from their own community with you, would really help you to get the results that you desire.

    Hi Alessia,
there are travellers in most towns in Ireland, as they settle and integrate they become a bit harder to identify, and prob less likely to be the subject you are after. If you are ever in Tuam, Enniscorthy, New Ross, Ballymun, Clondalkin, Claremorris, Athy, Carlow, Tallaght.

If you don’t know how to identify your subject you might have some difficulty. Kenh has a point about being un-PC (politically correct), most travellers are proud of their heritage, its the bigots in our country that have a problem with talking in real terms

Try the links mentioned above if you want an introduction to an individual who would be open to your project, otherwise get a map and hit the road, ask in any town and most people will know where to point you. Whether they’ll admit to it or not is another little obstacle we Irish need to overcome.

Look forward to seeing your take especially if you get to events like weddings/funerals etc.

When I read that statement above from John, I immediately thought of that fantastic series he did . . .
and there it is. Brilliant, I will never forget that.
